Test: Lexus GS 450h F-Sport

This means that "non-Europeans" have to put in a lot of effort and in many ways outperform European products in order to become visible and get into a wider range of choices. It all depends on the location of the goods - the first Hyundai Ponys were sold here without much effort for honey, but in the prestigious classes everything is just the opposite; We have heard owners of prestigious (certainly European) cars praise the tested Lexus, but always with a short and decisive remark at the end: “But (for example) Volvo is still much better (in something).”

Therefore, it is clear that Lexus does not send flowers to Europe for sure.

But the Japanese are diligent and learn; Americans like a lot, we are more limited and critical in Europe, and if we like it here, then (mostly) they are there too. This is why the GS now looks like this: different from all Audi, Volvo and everyone in between, so as not to give the impression that it is a cheap copy, but at the same time, so that it does not leave indifferent many people. Let's face it: most people like it. No small print.

Perhaps the opinion was largely influenced by the well-chosen color that suits him perfectly, and the fact that in the test case it is an F Sport version, which in Lexus means something similar to an Audi S or Beemvee M, cannot be overlooked. I.: clearly expressed, not excessive aggression.

The interior is also sportier than the "regular" Gees, but still more prestigious. Upon entering, the driver (and co-driver) is greeted with warm, nutty-colored leather, pleasant to the touch and of high quality. The driver's seat has several (electrical) adjustment options, including "closing" the side supports, and both seats are heated and cooled in three stages.

The combination of sportiness and prestige of the dashboard is also delicious, where two things deserve special praise: the large center screen and the (white) illuminated switches, which are so good that even a tired eye can recognize them. Which is far from the rule.

It is possible that many people who switch to it from a European product of this class will be a little disappointed with the equipment and options. You will not find any improvements in it: none of the boxes is cooled, it does not have a projection screen (windshield), it does not monitor the tire pressure, it does not control driving in the lane, there is no automatic braking system (of all similar safety devices, the generation has only blind light to control blind spots), there is no radar cruise control and the menus are not the most user-friendly, like a typical Lexus mouse (control through the central screen), otherwise a completely correct, ergonomic and useful solution, yet it did not turn out to be the most practical among the solutions of this class. The presentation of information, both in terms of quantity and display possibilities, is less rich than in the case of Bimway, but it is also almost cruel to find out during your time in this Jiza that you will not miss many of the above.

The GS is clearly too small to be driven in the back seat. At the rear, there are no heated seats and separate air conditioning settings. The trunk is also a smaller and less oversized one, which has a lot to do with the batteries in the hybrid drive system. Therefore, in the world of German product excellence, such a Lexus does not seem to be the best choice for someone who selects items of equipment from a list and compares liters and millimeters.

It may seem strange and surprising, but this Gees is very pleasant to sit, stand and drive. This is an environment that fills a person with comfort and relaxation. A navigator is the device that arouses in a man approaching our capital a desire to meet a Slovene who pronounces the word Ljubljana so sensually (at the same time, he is bypassed with completely opposite emotions when an Austrian pronounces Graz). On the other hand, a hybrid drive is one that makes a driver want to meet a temperamental driver in an Audi or Beemvee with those magic letters on the road. The GS 450h F Sport is extremely powerful.

So, you got into the GS 450h F Sport. Yes, it is a hybrid, but it is also an F Sport, which means not only the appearance, but also the mechanics. This one is primarily focused on sportiness, so do not dream of spending five liters per 100 kilometers. It is true that at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour consumption - due to battery operation and idling of the gasoline engine - can be a liter per 100 kilometers, but per 100 kilometers it will be six, 130 8,5, 160 10 and 180 13 - so the on-board computer says at least.

However, it is this hybrid system or its electrical part that makes you not "ashamed" of the fact that it has only a V6 engine. It is also powerful enough to charge the hybrid battery quietly and jerk-free at 200 km / h in addition to driving, and with the electric part of the drive system under normal conditions, it always accelerates to 257 km / h when the driver wants it. More than enough for the German Autobahn.

With such pure acceleration and, above all, the flexibility that the hybrid drive allows, it will be easy to forgive a few decibels more in the cabin - in fact, this is the “fault” of the continuously variable (mostly planetary) transmission, which behaves like a CVT: so much gas, how many rpm. However, this GS also provides fast yet easy and fairly economical driving if the driver is not nervous. A large rotary knob can interfere with the mechanics: there is a significant difference between the ECO, Normal and Sport positions in the torque and power curves of the drive system and in the frequency of switching off the gasoline engine, and Sport + also affects the rigidity of the chassis.

On the one hand, it is more convenient and economical, on the other hand, it is more aggressive and more direct in communicating with the driver. The first side takes care of the comfort and relaxation of passengers, and the second - about the pleasures of fast driving. Remember the GS is (also) rear driven where it also has a partial diff lock and a bit of pepper is added by the stabilization system which is (of course) quite mild as it announces quite late and therefore allows quite a bit of rear wheel slip. wheels on a slippery road. However, both anti-skid and anti-skid systems are switched without complicated interventions; the first can be permanently turned off at speeds up to 50 kilometers per hour, the second - only at rest. You just need to decide in advance how you plan to drive corners.

Regarding the latter, disabling stabilization, enabling Sport + and the right road gives the driver a ton of fun that far surpasses most front-wheel drive vehicles, even XNUMX-wheel drive vehicles (which is controversial, but, let's say, in most cases a driver-car combination), and (no longer) so many similar cars driving behind.

That's why I say the GS 450h F Sport is easy to drive and appreciates driving pleasure of all kinds with the likes of Beemveys, while at the same time confirms that the Japanese can also get lucky with the idea of a car (sport) elegance.

Everything else is prejudice. Avoid them.

Overall rating (362/420)

  • Until a few years ago, Lexus cars were great, but not convincing enough. Now, with the GS model, that too is history. However, this GS is exactly what it was for the BMW M5, although the latter is indeed more raw and therefore hard to compare directly. A car for those who strive for excellence.

  • Exterior (15/15)

A classic sedan with a prestigious yet aggressive sporty look. Especially in this color and in the front.

  • Interior (107/140)

Some grudge against the sensors and a little more on the trunk, otherwise this is a typically prestigious thing.

  • Engine, transmission (61

    / 40)

Perfectly functioning hybrid drive from both engines to the wheels.

  • Driving performance (62

    / 95)

The European driver will have to get used to it a little, otherwise it is a very dynamic sedan in all respects.

  • Performance (35/35)

The drive response is almost raw, especially thrilling at high speeds.

  • Security (40/45)

Slightly poor rear visibility and almost no modern safety features even without radar cruise control.

  • Economy (42/50)

For those who don't like diesels, this is probably the best combination of performance and economy in a powerful gasoline engine.
