Peugeot 306HDI

The last acquisition before the six in his name turned into a seven is a 2-liter turbodiesel engine with direct fuel injection through the common rail system. It is, of course, a well-known division of the PSA group, which fulfills its purpose in many Peugeot and Citroëns.

Well, it's right that he also found his way under the hood of the 306. At the start of his career, he was already well equipped with a diesel engine. The old indirect injection engine was one of the best.

This also applies to HDi. The engine has 90 hp and is even more impressive with 205 Nm of torque at 1900 rpm. From idle onwards, the torque curve rises well, so there is no hesitation when starting off and accelerating from low revs. The curve is continuous enough that the engine does not lose breath at higher rpm, but of course the usable area of diesel engines is less than that of gasoline engines and therefore it is necessary to use the gear lever more often.

The HDi engine also benefits from a smooth ride. Vibration is not felt either during acceleration under load or at high revs. Diesel chatter is present, of course. It is never too intrusive, but audible, so additional sound insulation will not be superfluous. With this engine, you will be driving fast on the road and will be quite a rare guest at gas stations.

We accelerated to 100 km / h in 13 seconds, which is worse than the factory acceleration. Thus, the measurements of flexibility confirmed the subjective impression: the car “pulls” well and you will not be embarrassed when overtaking and driving on slopes. A final speed of more than 5 km / h is sufficient for calm cruises, but then the consumption increases slightly.

We didn't press too hard on the test car, so it averaged less than seven liters of diesel per hundred kilometers, even a good five liters when driving slowly. Well, the factory-promised lowest numbers come from the history of truly disciplined riding, so you probably won't be able to achieve them in practice.

The years are best known to the lion in the interior, mainly due to the angular shapes of the dashboard. In addition, it sits too high, or even in the front seats, and there is enough space in the back seat, the upholstery is comfortable, the workmanship is good ...

The construction tax must also be paid immediately, as the purchase must be raised above a fairly high level.

The chassis is completely at the level of junior competitors: comfortable on all types of surfaces, reliable on the road and briskly controllable in turns. The brakes are barely up to par, the level of passive safety with the addition of ABS and four airbags seems to be quite high.

evaluation

  • The 306 HDi is still in good shape. It is affordable enough to make up for its mature age. However, he already has good manners on the road from birth. The French have honed them a bit over the years, as well as the workmanship, and if you don't suffer from the fact that the latest model should shine in the garage, it's worth thinking of this Peugeot as well.

We praise and reproach

flexible motor

good driving performance

low fuel consumption

comfortable suspension

good handling

high cargo edge of the trunk

outdated dashboard shape

sit too high
