Test: Volkswagen Beetle 2.0 TSI DSG Sport

Then I stopped laughing; Moreover, I now state that the Beetle can also be quite a sporty beast, especially when it comes to the sportiest package, which sounds like a 2.0 TSI DSG Sport with 200 horsepower.

But first we need to focus on the form

This one is really more dynamic. The car, as is customary in the automotive world, has increased by several millimeters (84 in width and 152 in length) and at the same time has become 12 millimeters lower. The hood has become longer, the windshield is pushed back, the rear part is supplemented with a spoiler. Volkswagen chief designer Walter de Silva (concern) in Klaus Bischoff (The Volkswagen brand) they have retained the traditional features, in fact, the legendary shape, while at the same time giving it a less restrained fresh imprint.

If you remember, in 2005 (no, this is not a mistake, it really was almost seven years ago!) A study was shown in Detroit. Regster, a kind of sports model based on the new Beetle. Because people responded to the prototype superbly, Ragster served as a kind of vision of where the successor might be heading. And in fact they opposed it more dynamic form, thanks to which, thanks to the changes in the appearance, there is more space in the passenger compartment, since the tracks are wider (63 mm at the front, 49 mm at the rear), and the wheelbase is even larger (by 22 mm). ).

Look at the photo and drool how many people licked during our test in Ljubljana; car 19 inch wheels with special rims only for 147 kW version they fit him perfectly, especially if the red brake calipers are glowing under them; the white turbo over both sills is so well set that I can't even imagine another jumper. The agent only forgot about the bi-xenon headlights with daytime running lights. LED technologyon such a machine to raise the brand image Volkswagen a must-have that is easy to fix with a tick in the accessory list and a surcharge of 748 sparkles.

Then take a look inside ...

... And the realization that even with an increase of a few millimeters Beetle it is still a vehicle for two adult passengers. I'm not saying you can't cram two tall friends in the back, but make sure they move early first, or at least have a few boiled wine kids during Happy December to be more flexible. And not too much, or you'll end up with new accessories forever.

Joking aside, the back seat is really small, and the trunk is below average. For comparison only: golf, with which Beetle shares the platform, has that 40 liters more place for bags and travel bags. Ahead, however, is a completely different story. We did not have enough storage space, although the pockets in the door with elastic bands and an additional classic box in front of the passenger (in addition to the lower one that opens from top to bottom!) Really good ideas, but the spaciousness and ergonomics are completely on the level of other Volkswagen models.

What's more, with the extra white (because the car is white on the outside) insert that extends from the top of the dash to the lower portions of the side windows, the sense of spaciousness and uniqueness becomes much more pronounced. I like it. The designers are certainly lucky with this car, as the new Beetle gets under the skin of a person, even if he is not a fan of it at first.

And also workmanship well, except for the side window on the driver's side, which several times did not want to return to its original position. However, we missed three additional gauges at the top of the center console that show oil temperature, boost pressure in the turbocharger, and a stopwatch. As far as I could find out from the brochures, this is part of the accessories for all the Beetles for which they want 148 euros and it will only be available later. Well Volkswagens, the story is similar to the headlights: they should be standard, at least on the most powerful version. Otherwise, the retail price will go up (be careful, the base Beetle costs just under 18k, which is quite affordable at the same salty prices!), But different GTI- It may not be for everyone.

Are you wondering why GTI

Because ten thousandths more expensive Golf GTI the same gearbox and the same engine, only it has ten more horses. So is the Beetle really cheaper? Well, perhaps the answer would even be yes if we did not take into account the equipment and especially the factor of driving pleasure. The Golf has taken care of a more pronounced engine sound, and the DSG transmission greets passengers in the car and random pedestrians on the road with each shift. Especially when shifting at moderate speeds, when you quickly "shift" gears from intersection to intersection.

This is not the case with the Beetle, or rather, it only hints at the playful events between the gears. It's a bit of a drumbeat, but you won't get a better night's sleep than hearing. Then there is the fact that they forgot (read: saved) in steering leverswhich are not in the Beetle. Thus, there remains only the automatic mode of shifting and moving the gear lever forward (for a higher gear) or back (for a lower one). Hell, we could finally undo this switching scheme as they start competing in the World Rally Championship next year and Sebastian Ogier definitely won't have a 'reverse' scheme. WRC Field.

Otherwise, there is a minus non-disconnectable stabilization system ESP (after all, this is a sports car, isn't it Volkswagen?) and the percentage of hands-free use, but definitely a big plus for the chassis, traction and above all the engine and transmission combination. Gentlemen (and ladies) or ladies, I would say, since I've seen quite a few pretty young women in previous Beetles, you definitely haven't come across such a fast Beetle.

Six-speed dual-clutch transmission DSG it delivers the most ideal power transfer quickly and smoothly, and the ESP system works hard to get power on the roads (too often sandblasted in winter). However, the engineers have obviously spent many months or even years on the chassis and mass distribution as they provide very fast cornering as well as dynamic ramps provided the ESP is not in the way.

Despite its shape, which is still far from the ideal inverted drop of water, the Beetle never disappoints at higher speeds (gusts), directional stability (crosswind), or under full braking, which, unfortunately, becomes an increasingly common practice on our highways. It is known that many kilometers have already been covered during factory tests on German tracks.

At first skeptical, then ...

If at first I was a little skeptical about participating in the new Beetle, then the thought of getting rid of the familiar smell of overheated tires and tired brakes was much clearer: new Bettle it's not just a smarter design sports, but there is (probably unlike 1.2 TSI wings 1.6 TDI) the most vigorous version, very close to rockets in the lower middle class.

Will 1.4 TSI be the best combination?

May be. If you remember Ferdinand Porsche, then you can safely say that the Beetle is closer to the Porsche 911 than the Golf GTI. The basic touches that have survived to this day are the same as drawn by the same seer. Sounds good, doesn't it?

Face to face: Dusan Lukic

Such a car is unlikely to leave a person indifferent, be it a really cute shape, a sporty gurgling exhaust sound or the spaciousness and airiness of the cabin. On the other hand, emotions, only negative ones, are caused by the absence of Bluetooth, DSG, which always switches to too high or too low a gear, and the absence of control levers while driving. So the Beetle, yes, the two-liter TSI too, and the combination of everything else needs to be revisited.

Face to face: Matevj HribarIf the previous Beetle was hippie because of its nostalgic form and because of this vase of flowers behind the wheel, then this is the latest Turbo Beetle raver. With a sportier look, huge wheels, a shy TURBO lettering on the side and a stunningly powerful engine, it has gone from a smoky flower child to a hyperactive Gavioli embassy visitor, reminiscent of old-fashioned bell-bottomed trousers. shoe cover with thick insole. So: the Beetle keeps up with the times. Thumbs up!

Overall rating (324/420)

  • If you're willing to sacrifice trunk usability and rear seat space for an interesting and distinctive shape, then the Beetle is the way to go. We praise the lower price than its predecessor, and we were particularly impressed by the sportiness of the most toxic version. GTI beware!

  • Exterior (13/15)

Still recognizable, but very different from its predecessor.

  • Interior (88/140)

If front passengers are king, rear seat and trunk space is just a wish. Average hardware (no speakerphone to phone!) and too little storage space.

  • Engine, transmission (58

    / 40)

A real little GTI, just without the more pronounced engine sound and the gearshift ears on the steering wheel.

  • Driving performance (61

    / 95)

If anything ends up in your pants, you will be one of the first to finish on the serpentine road. Clear enough?

  • Performance (28/35)

It can show muscle both in corners and on the track, and the flexibility of the engine is fine too.

  • Security (32/45)

Four airbags and two curtain airbags, standard ESP, we only lacked xenon headlights.

  • Economy (44/50)

Relatively good price (also or mostly basic versions!), Average warranty, slightly higher fuel consumption with this engine can't be a factor, can it?
