How dynamic traction control works

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC). It is equipped with cars of some leading automakers. Among them is the BMW concern. The idea is to provide the best traction in a sporty driving style. The function is activated / deactivated by pressing a single button. It is useful if you are driving on a snowy or slippery road.

Thanks to this option, traction is increased. Thanks to this, the driver can control the car in turn. Such a function will help to avoid an accident if traveling in unfamiliar terrain and not calculating the rate of entry into a turn.

Dynamic traction control is available as a feature of the equipment along with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control). If you want to use a dynamic and sporty driving style, you can activate the system, but the stability of the movement is maintained.

How dynamic traction control works

When the system is activated, engine power and wheel slip are limited to stabilize the vehicle. However, sometimes it only gets in the way. Consequently, the effect of the system can be minimized with the click of a button. The dynamics of the vehicle while driving increases without jeopardizing road safety.

Often, wheel slip is required (for example, for drifting), so manufacturers equip their models with a button to deactivate this function. It is easy to recognize by the corresponding inscription - "DTC".

How the system works

Sensors located on each wheel transmit information about the rotation speed of each of them to the control unit. When the wheel begins to spin faster than others, the system recognizes slippage. To stabilize the car, the computer can give a command to slow the wheel or reduces the traction of the power unit.

Depending on the model of auto traction control can turn off one or more spark plugs, change the lead angle, change the portion of the fuel entering the cylinders or cover the throttle. So DTC reduces the thrust of the car so that it does not go into a skid and does not fly off the track.

When do you need DTC

As we saw, traction control can be useful in extreme situations when driving sports. However, under normal conditions, this system is not useful - it only reduces the dynamics of the car. If the driver uses a measured style, then it can be disabled.

The button has two modes of operation. The slip restriction control is activated after pressing the button once. DSC turns on simultaneously with this function. This is noticeable when the wheels turn slightly at start. If you hold the DTC button a little longer, you completely turn off both systems.

ABS is an exception since it cannot be turned off. If you turned off the system, the corresponding message will appear on the dashboard. This suggests that you are now using the settings for professionals. Electronic systems are not activated until the button is pressed again, after which the warning disappears.

DTC is a characteristic of a BMW car manufacturer. Similar systems exist in other cars, but are called differently. The E90, for example, is one of the cars that has this feature.

If an error signal appears on the dashboard that does not resolve when the system is activated / deactivated, you can use the repair kit that comes with the car. However, since this package is quite expensive, you need to make sure that the problem is in the control unit, and not in the transmission system.

Questions and answers:

How does DTC work on BMW? The DTC system has two key functions: it regulates traction and allows the engine to be activated in a sport mode without compromising directional stability.

What is DTS BMW e60? This is a system of so-called traction control (traction control while maintaining directional stability, which allows you to maintain the stability of the car when you suddenly press the gas pedal).

What does the DSC button mean on a BMW? This is an electronic complex that controls traction and directional stability. When this button is pressed, the system prevents the wheels from slipping at the start or on slippery roads.
