Mercedes M271 engine

The production of Mercedes-Benz M271 engines began in 2002 as an improved novelty. Subsequently, its structure was adjusted depending on the requests of buyers.

The general features of the engine structure remain unchanged:

  1. Four cylinders with a diameter of 82 mm are housed in an aluminum crankcase.
  2. Injection power system.
  3. Weight - 167 kg.
  4. Engine displacement - 1,6-1,8 liters (1796 cm3).
  5. Recommended fuel is AI-95.
  6. Power - 122-192 horsepower.
  7. Fuel consumption - 7,3 liters per 100 km.

Where is the engine number

The M271 engine number is located on the cylinder block on the right, on the gearbox flange.

Engine modifications

Mercedes M271 engine specifications, modifications, problems, reviews

The Mercedes M271 engine is produced to this day. During this time, a number of modifications have been developed. The original version described above is called KE18 ML. In 2003, the DE18 ML engine was developed - it turned out to be more economical in terms of fuel consumption.

Until 2008, these were the only representatives of the M271, until the KE16 ML modification appeared. It has a reduced engine size, multi-injection system and could develop serious power at a relatively low speed.

Already in 2009, the production of engines of the DE18 AL modification began, in which a turbocharger was installed. Its use reduces noise and vibration levels, adding comfort and environmental friendliness. At the same time, the maximum power has increased.

Problems and Weaknesses

Injectors can leak through their own body (connector). Most often it manifests itself on engines with high mileage and at low temperatures. In this case, the driver will feel a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin. To eliminate this problem, it is necessary to replace the old-style nozzles (green) with the new-style nozzles (purple).

Weaknesses have not bypassed the compressor either, namely, the front bearings of the screw shafts often suffer. The first sign of bearing wear is howl. According to the manufacturer, the compressors are not repairable, but the craftsmen managed to find a Japanese analogue for these bearings and successfully replace them with clearances.

The oil filter housing in early versions did not cause any problems, except that the gasket for the connection to the block could leak. But in later versions, the oil filter housing for some reason became plastic, which, of course, entailed its deformation from high temperatures.

Like most Mercedes engines, there is a problem with oil clogging the crankcase ventilation pipes. The problem is solved by replacing the tubes with new ones.

The timing chain on all model variants tends to stretch. The chain resource leaves much to be desired - about 100 thousand km.

Tuning М271

The Mercedes-Benz M271 engine is a very flexible design to adapt to the needs of the car owner. To increase power, a low resistance filter is built into the system and the compressor pulley is changed. The process ends with the revision of the firmware.

In later versions, it is possible to replace the intercooler, exhaust and firmware.
