Test drive Peugeot 5008 vs Hyundai Santa Fe

Two different cars from two different parts of the world perform the same social function - they carry large families and their infinite number of things.

Stylish interior and ease of control or a powerful motor and a spacious trunk? Choosing a large family crossover turns out to be not so easy. Especially when it comes to the classics of the genre, on the one hand, and a completely new model, which only fans of the brand know, on the other.

The new Peugeot 5008 is very similar to the younger brother of the 3008 - the external performance of the front base of the cars is almost identical. LED slingshot headlights, curvy round shapes and a wide grille made the car stand out in the crowd. They look at it in traffic jams, ask about the characteristics and price, but for some reason they do not look into the salon. And in vain, because the inside of the car is even more interesting. Inspired by aviation, Peugeot designers built a fighter's dashboard with all that it implies: a gearbox joystick, lever buttons and a steering wheel.

The interior colors of the 5008 are bright but unobtrusive. The design of the digital dashboard can be changed by content (more / less data), as well as by color (to aggressive red or economical white). The menu contains massage settings, "fragrance" (three scents to choose from) and "interior lighting", when soft blue light spreads under the center console, in cup holders and on the sides of the doors.

Games with light are alien to the solid Hyundai Santa Fe. Everything here is tailored for practicality: for example, the crossover will delight even the back row passengers with the backrest tilt and seat outreach settings. The skin is soft, with beautiful stitching and anatomical lines under the back. Unlike the Frenchman, the Korean man can not only warm the front row pillows, but also cool them. Moreover, ventilation and heating turn on themselves, based on the temperature overboard - you just need to put a tick in the settings. Comfortable!

Massage, electrical adjustments and memory of the positions of the driver's seat, steering wheel tilt and reach - all this is also in the car. The seats look rich, but that doesn't make them comfortable - the back is stiff. Everything is like buying a status office chair: either comfortable or beautiful. But the passenger seat also has electrical adjustments, and they can be controlled by both the driver and the passenger in the back row, because they are located on the side above the center armrest.

Wide door niches, a voluminous armrest box - this car has room to accommodate. Back row passengers will be very spacious, if you wish, you can lower the wide armrest with two cup holders.

Trunks are a different story. Hyundai Santa Fe has a big one, even with the third row of seats folded out (328 liters). With the seats of the second and third rows folded down to the maximum, 2019 liters are released. But the Peugeot 5008 has almost no trunk - instead of it, the third row of seats is laid flat. And if you raise it, then there will be nowhere to fold something more or less voluminous. 165 liters remain behind the chairs and only a couple of shoe boxes will fit there. This is probably why the French installed Isofix mounts on all the second-row pillows. That is, if there are three children in the family, then all car seats or boosters stand in the second row, and the trunk remains with a volume of 952 liters. The maximum volumes can be achieved by folding all the seats in general, except for the driver's - then 2 liters are already released.

Cons for two

The Santa Fe dash is half analog (tachometer and fuel gauge on the sides), half digital (onboard computer and speedometer in the center). Like a competitor, it also changes color depending on the choice of driving style: eco green, sporty red or standard blue. On the windshield the figure of the speed of movement is duplicated. Santa Fe knows how to read speed limit signs, but does not display them on the projection - you can see the restrictions only on the main screen of the media system.

Peugeot has softer colors. The location of the driver's tidy is unusual - above the steering wheel, but it's easy to get used to it. Speed limit signs are displayed there, which the car also reads. Seeing them in front of you is more convenient than squinting at the map.

Hyundai's media display is built into a separate screen, as if it had been stuck into a dashboard at the last moment. The screen is touch-sensitive, but there are also duplicate buttons and handwheels on the sides. Graphically, the system falls short of European standards; I would like to replace the pixel navigation with Google maps from the phone, which is connected via the corresponding USB connector next to the wireless charging box. The image quality on the big screen of the 5008 settings is better, wireless charging is also available.

It is not easy for Koreans to compete with European media systems, but in the case of Peugeot, there is still a chance. Because the same Hyundai CarPlay is tuned better. Peugeot doesn't have basic navigation, maps only work from the phone, and the media system stretches the phone's image to pixels. The rear-view camera of the Frenchman is of frankly poor quality. Surprisingly, the previous generation 5008 had a much clearer image, which was not sold in Russia. Hyundai's rear-view camera is also fuzzy, with pixel stripes. Therefore, there is no winner at all in this question.

On different roads

The steering wheel of Santa Fe is light only in statics, and while driving at speed it becomes heavy, filled with effort so much that even light maneuvering in the lane is difficult - you always have to hold the steering wheel with both hands. The gas pedal is tight, the Korean accelerates lazily, but after 80 km / h the whole weight of this car is felt - it slows down reluctantly.

All units are well insulated, and the windows in our version of Santa Fe are double, so there is no extraneous noise in the car. Even the rumbling of a 200-horsepower turbodiesel engine is not audible inside. Paired with an eight-speed "automatic", the car drives smoothly, quickly switches to a higher gear, saving diesel fuel. If you want to give the car more life, you can switch it to sport mode with the "Sport" button - then the transmissions are delayed a little longer. You should not expect a gambling ride from Santa Fe, it is rather stable, made with an emphasis on the driver's prudence.

At a slow pace, all small road irregularities break through in the cabin - vibrations are transmitted to the steering wheel, to the tidy, to the seats. As if entering a gravel road involves a massage of the entire salon, this small tremor is so sensitive. With an increase in speed, this drawback is leveled - and Hyundai turns into an almost ideal car in terms of ride comfort, with almost minimal longitudinal swing.

But the wide 5008 is a pleasure to drive at all speeds. The steering wheel is light and quickly transfers maneuvers to the units, the car is very predictable in reactions and quickly dives into turns. The sway is almost imperceptible, and for a more fun ride, there is a sport mode that delays the response of the box and adds gravity to the steering wheel. The Frenchman also transfers minor irregularities to the salon. And with energetic acceleration, the perfectly calibrated connection between the engine and the six-speed gearbox is very well felt. Diesel in 5008 is noisier, but diesel consumption is a couple of liters less.

Unlike the competitor, the Santa Fe is equipped with an all-wheel drive system with clutch locking, which makes it a leader in off-roading. The Frenchman with his electronic settings, which can be changed depending on the road on the washer of the center console ("Norma", "Snow", "Dirt" and "Sand"), is able to cope with light off-road near the settlements in New Riga, but the blurry village the track near Tula was no longer for him.

Who is who

Engineers equipped both cars with active safety packages. For the Korean, such a package includes an adaptive cruise, a system for tracking lane markings and keeping in a lane (the car steers itself), a collision avoidance system that can stop the car, tracking a dead zone with braking in case of changing lanes into an obstacle. The Peugeot 5008 can be ordered with auto cornering, adaptive cruise, anti-collision system to stop, distance sensor, lane crossing steering, blind spot monitoring and driver fatigue monitoring.

These crossovers are considered competitors in the market, but they still have different buyers. If the need for large volumes outweighs the pleasure of driving, the choice will obviously fall on the Korean crossover. But if daily operation implies pleasant emotions and there is no need to carry boards to the dacha, then the Frenchman will fall in love with the whole family for a long time.
