Replacing a driver's license when changing a surname

When a girl marries and takes her husband's surname, she naturally faces the question of changing her driver's license. It is worth noting that the Rules of the Road clearly state in this regard:

It is not necessary to change your driver's license when changing your surname. The rights are issued for 10 years and you can continue to use them without fear.

If you are afraid of any nit-picking on the part of vigilant traffic police officers, or if a situation arose that you purchased a car after marriage, and it is already registered for a new surname, then you can make a duplicate of the marriage certificate, notarize it and present it to traffic police officers in case of any claims. A duplicate will cost you 100-200 rubles.

If you still decide that you still need to change your rights (for many girls, this decision is also justified by the fact that they don’t really like the photo on the old rights), you need to contact the traffic police registration office and provide the following documents:

  • a completed application on a form that will be given to you by the traffic police;
  • medical health certificate;
  • passport;
  • Marriage certificate;
  • receipt of payment of state duty - 800 rubles;
  • a certificate of passing the state exam at a driving school (if you lose it, you will have to take the exams again);
  • old rights;
  • documents for a car or a certificate from the place of work if you are a driver.

The same applies to men who decide to take their wife's surname or change their surname for some other reason. The main thing is that you always have a document with you that confirms that your last name is rightfully yours.

It is a completely different matter if you not only changed your last name, but also want to add a new category, lost your rights, the rights have expired or you need to restore them. In this case, you definitely need to change the VU, otherwise you fall under the article of the Code of Administrative Offenses, according to which you and the car can be detained until the circumstances are clarified, fined or removed from driving.
