VW EOS 2.0 TDI (103 kW) DSG

The main goal of convertible top cars is clear: a pleasant journey on beautiful roads, preferably at the right temperature (and slightly cloudy skies so that the sun doesn't fall right on your head), not too slow to enjoy the driving dynamics and engine. sounds, and not too fast to be overshadowed by the sound of the wind. So fast that passengers can enjoy not only the ride, but also the surroundings.

Does the Eos 2.0 TDI meet the requirements (those that, of course, depend on it and not at the mercy of Mother Nature)? Almost.

A pleasant cruise, at least on the undercarriage, is mastered. Since this is not about raging on cornering limits, it doesn't matter that the engine is spinning the “wrong” wheelset, that the suspension is as good as good road position. For those who swear at high speeds through corners, a little tougher. As long as the speeds are such that the tires don't squeal, the Eos's steering is precise enough, the brakes are reliable enough, and the dampers are strong enough to enjoy the ride from corner to corner. If you exaggerate, there will be no drama: Eos warns you understeer that you are asking too much of him. How to drive a Golf.

The feeling inside is also quite pleasant. If no one is sitting in the back (which if you don't drive small children there, the only mercy to the passengers), you can install the windshield above the seats, raise the side windows and use the Eosa with the roof down, even in winter cold. There is enough heating for something like that, windscreens too.

The feel and spaciousness of the front end is in any case at the level that we are used to from this manufacturer's cars, and since the driver has only two pedals, the ride will be even more tireless. How to drive a Golf (with DSG, of course).

Just two legs? Surely the DSG label means a robotic dual-clutch transmission? the pinnacle of what gear technology offers (excluding racing and semi-race sequential transmissions) at the moment. Fast and smooth.

Motor? The well-known (also from Golf) two-liter turbodiesel, a little old and without Common Rail technology and therefore shaking when ignited, is always too loud, but not least powerful and economical enough so that there are no complaints from those who are ready to put up with its nature ... With the roof up, the feel (due to vibration and noise) in the Eos is just as good as in the Golf 2.0 TDI. With the roof down. ... Let's put it this way: if you don't like listening to the rumble of a diesel and if the smell of exhaust fumes bothers you, think of an Eosa with a gasoline engine in its nose (as befits a convertible).

So is the Eos just golf upstairs without? No. In fact, such a comparison does not make sense at all. True, when the roof of the Eos is up, it's less useful and cramped than the Golf's. And what . . You don't even have to lower the roof to start having fun? enough to know that you can do it.

evaluation

  • The Eos is one of the more useful (coupe) convertibles, also because it's still quite spacious. But think carefully about whether you really want to hear the rumble of a diesel in the nose of a convertible.
