Volvo XC90 2017 in a new body

When the first XC2002 appeared in 90, few would have thought that the car would stay on the market for 12 years in almost unchanged condition. Yes, over the years, the Volvo XC90 has been restyled several times, but it was more of a point rather than global. But in fairness, let's say that the 90st generation loved the Volvo XC1. And they loved me very much. Even in recent years, the car was eagerly bought, and the people constantly noted that the Volvo XC90 is the most affordable premium class.

The history of the creation of the second generation Volvo XC90

Despite the good sales of the first-generation crossover, motorists around the world were waiting for not easy updates, but for a full-fledged second generation. 12 years is still a decent period and many perceived the model as clearly outdated, even if, in principle, it was not.

It got to the point that the Swedish carmaker artificially drowned out talk about the second generation of the crossover. The reason for this was the financial problems that hit the manufacturer in the middle of the XNUMXs, although already at that time the Swedes began to work on the SPA platform, which promised to bring dividends in the future.

Running a little ahead, we note that it is on this platform that the 90nd generation Volvo XC2 is built, which will be discussed in this review. A breath of fresh air and the necessary investment came from Asia.

As you know, since 2010, the Swedish carmaker belongs to the Chinese holding - Geely Automobile. Stable funding has allowed Swedish engineers to finally start developing the second generation of the flagship crossover.

Development, according to representatives of "Volvo", went on for three years. And so, they waited. Having previously presented the new Volvo XC90 at home in Stockholm, the official presentation was held at the Paris Motor Show. The car immediately received a lot of flattering reviews both for the updated exterior and interior design, and for the technical part.

The first batch of 90nd generation Volvo XC2 cars, called "First Edition", was sold via the Internet within two days. A total of 1927 cars were sold. This figure is timed to the year the manufacturer was founded. For added exclusivity, each new Volvo XC90 has been numbered (from 1 to 1927).

It's scary to think how much the very first crossover of the second generation cost. Serial production of the model started in early 2015, and customers received the first crossovers closer to April.

Let's take a closer look at the new Volvo XC90, especially since a sufficient amount of information about the model has already appeared during the year of production.

Exterior Volvo XC90 2nd generation

Let's start with the front part of the Volvo XC90 2 generation review. You look at the face of the car and you immediately feel new, fresh and exciting. The exterior was designed by Thomas Ingenlath, a well-known designer in the automotive world. Yes, let Volvo XC90 fans not be offended, but the previous appearance, including the front part, looked archaic and pretty fed up.

On the sidelines, they even laughed at the crossover, they say, it costs so much, but outwardly you can't tell. The new Volvo XC90 fully meets the requirements of the premium segment. The designers have updated everything in the front, from the false radiator grille to the bumper with optics. But, the main thing that catches your eye is the updated emblem.

At Volvo, they decided to go back to basics and pay tribute to tradition. The spear of the god Mars, pointing upwards, is now in line with the chrome bar that crosses the false radiator grille. A similar style is inherent in the very first model of the concern - Jakob OV4, while on subsequent models the angle of inclination of the bar and boom was different. The new Volvo XC90 also received new optics.

New optics

The car now has a narrower look, with a frowning effect from the T-shaped LED daytime running lights. The fog lights have also changed, both in shape and location, and the large bumper has acquired a stylish protective strip that imitates a trapezoid.

Now let's take a look at the new Volvo XC90 in profile. The crossover looks just amazing. Much more modern and fresher than its predecessor. At the same time, the XC90 remained recognizable. It is absolutely certain that most car enthusiasts will know what kind of model it is when looking at the 90nd generation Volvo XC2. The body lines have become much smoother and more dynamic.

Looking at the car, you consciously understand that it is, indeed, a premium class. We see something expensive, strict and solid. The practicality of the crossover is also up to par. The large doors are perfectly proportioned and geometrically shaped, and the wheel arches are strikingly accentuated. By the way, they are able to accommodate wheels even on 21-inch disks. There is absolutely nothing to find fault with. One can only admire.

The general concept of tail lamps, or rather, their shape, has remained the same. They are all the same vertical, but a little shorter. In the new version, they do not reach the very roof. The bumper was also changed, which led to a change in the tailgate. It looks very impressive both in shape and in the level of glazing.

The design team working on the new Volvo XC90 deserves a special thank you for the look of the crossover. It seems that Thomas Ingenlat has gathered all motorists in the world and took into account their many wishes, combining everything into one whole. And now, let's proceed to the interior of the crossover, especially since there is even more new and interesting!

Interior of the new Volvo XC90 2017

See how Swedish designers have refreshed the interior of the new XC90. Everything is configured completely differently from the previous generation of the model. But, no matter how paradoxical it may sound, the salon is still recognizable. You can feel the level and quality, and the phenomenal assembly inherent in the Swedish manufacturer.

Center panel trim

There is no need to talk about the equipment - the highest class. In finishing the front panel, the manufacturer uses natural wood (birch), genuine leather, steel. Noteworthy is the center console, on which there are practically no buttons. The entire control package is assembled into a 9.5-inch touchscreen with a Sensus interface (climate control, navigation, audio, Apple and Android integrations, voice commands).

By the way, the instrument panel, where the 12-inch graphic display is located, looks no less modern and technologically advanced.

In general, minimalism is observed in the front of the cabin. Nothing superfluous, no congestion, everything for true comfort. Driving such a car, you feel somehow special. The front seats are already in the initial configuration equipped with sidewall adjustment, lumbar support and cushion length. Even massage functions can be ordered as an option.

Needless to say, Volvo sets the highest bar. Separately, it should be said about the audio system, which is equipped with the new Volvo XC90. It was developed by premium manufacturer Browers & Wilkins. In the basic equipment, it comes with 6 speakers and a 50W amplifier, but in the most expensive version - 19 speakers + a subwoofer and a 12-channel Harman amplifier. The total power of such a system is 1400 W.

The Volvo XC90's rear row seats are very comfortable. Only there is not enough space for three passengers. Although, if you put the child in the center seat, it will be quite comfortable. Separate climate control is available to passengers in the back row, and its adjustment is carried out through a touch display built into the center armrest and a 220V outlet.

In addition, the Volvo XC90 can be equipped with a third row of seats. But there is absolutely a minimum of space, it is more intended for children. The boot volume of the second generation Volvo XC90 is 936 liters with the third row seats folded.

Under the raised floor there is a niche for things, a dock and air suspension cylinders, with the help of which the feed is lowered and raised for convenient loading of cargo. The luggage compartment door is equipped with an electric drive and opens, as it is now fashionable with a swing of the foot. This is very convenient when your hands are busy.

Thanks to this new unit, in comparison with the previous version, the new Volvo XC90 has become as much as 14 cm longer and 0.7 cm wider, but the crossover height has decreased by 0.9 cm.The use of modern materials in the body structure and chassis has reduced the weight of the car by almost 100 kg. And this despite the fact that the size of the crossover has grown. The front suspension of the Volvo XC90 is independent, on two wishbones, the rear is independent, multi-link.
