Volkswagen Transporter station wagon

To summarize the introduction: The conveyor is designed to transport people, but it is inconvenient. This is true if we look at today's cross-section: such a T cannot be compared with the comfort of passenger cars; but if we look in time, with a simple van adapted to transport people on simple seats, we humans have not yet traveled so comfortably.

Two features worth mentioning: interior noise is pleasantly subdued, and the engine's power is sufficient to exceed the speed limit at the slightest inattention – even under adverse conditions such as a full seat or long climbs.

The engine of this Transporter is excellent and flawless: it always starts immediately and without hesitation and always delivers enough torque for a dynamic ride that can withstand (almost) any rhythm of today's traffic. However, there is no need for the "blockage" to be in circulation; it all depends only on the driver.

Driving the Transporter is easy if you get used to its external dimensions. The steering wheel can be turned just as (easily) as in cars, and the shifter is raised on the dashboard, it is pleasantly short and "at hand" - better than in many cars.

Also, all other controls - switches, buttons and levers - do not cause a bad mood, since they (with the exception of their size) are taken from cars of this brand. And this is good.

More and more people are looking for this type of vehicle for personal use - simply because it is as powerful and manageable (almost) as a passenger car, still relatively cheap, but very spacious and versatile. At Volkswagen (or especially at Volkswagen), the offer within this set of wishes is varied, and such a Transporter - in terms of price and equipment - is on the low end.

This means that it is a clean van with the most essential items needed to transport people. The front end is still the most personal, and the second and third rows of seats are devoid of soft upholstery and better materials, and it is also bare inside a rather small amount of sheet metal.

If you choose one for personal use, you will miss out on a lot of more or less "urgent" things. From small (trip computer, outside temperature information, at least rear parking assistance, adequate interior lighting and rear wiper) to large (sliding windows at least in the second row, air conditioning specifically for the rear and other side doors on the left side of the car), but this may be affected by additional equipment charges or, in some cases, already a mostly more prestigious version of this model.

Let us remind you that Volkswagen offers the Multivan, which can be much more prestigious than the average Slovenian passenger car. But also much more expensive.

It is clear that the Transporter is just a cargo van. It doesn't have leather on the steering wheel, but the plastic is good enough not to get in the way too much, even in the heat. Cabin fans (a special fan is provided for the rear along with an air mixture regulator) are powerful, but at the same time loud.

The seats, including the driver's, do not provide lateral grip and cannot tilt (except in the driver's seat), but they are well arched and stiff enough not to tire over long distances. The drawers are large, but there are only in the front door and on the dashboard; they are not found anywhere else.

Therefore, in such a transporter, in addition to the driver's seat, there are eight; the double seat in the front, the double seat in the second row (left) and the entire rear bench have a reclining backrest, while the two rear “sets” also fold forward and are completely removable without the use of tools. The right-hand seat in the second row is retractable only to facilitate access to the third row. Thus, such a T can quickly become a convenient means of delivery for transporting larger items, baggage, or even cargo.

The Test Transporter had six gearboxes (at idle it can easily shift into second gear because it's short enough) and an engine that at least seems to rev best at 2.900 rpm. This means about 160 kilometers per hour in sixth gear, more than decent fuel consumption (taking into account weight and dimensions) and - a violation of the speed limit.

It's also easy to drive on winding roads, where - in the case of the test car - the overall impression was spoiled only by winter tires, which at 30 degrees Celsius and above do not work even conditionally.

We've known about the Transporter for a long time: that the outside is just angular, that it makes good use of the interior and that it is just properly rounded, that it can have some (designer) personality and a family look. Since it is Volkswagen at the same time, it gives additional good performance. And since it is intended for transportation in the strict sense of the word, the buyer deliberately refuses the comfort of a passenger car.

Passengers do not suffer from this at all. If the driver is ever picky.

  • It cannot boast of comfort and equipment, but it is good mainly for (even fast) transportation of up to eight passengers, even over long distances. Plus a lot of luggage or cargo. And with moderate fuel consumption.
