Test drive Volkswagen Passat: standard

The two-liter gasoline engine of the updated model reaches almost diesel consumption

The Volkswagen Passat is the world's most successful mid-range model, with over 30 million vehicles sold. It is hardly worth mentioning that over the years this car has become the benchmark for its segment in a number of key parameters.

More modern look

Volkswagen underwent a massive Passat revamp last year as the facelifted car premiered in Bulgaria at the 2019 Sofia Motor Show in October. Exterior changes have been carefully considered - Volkswagen specialists further emphasized and improved the design of the Passat. The front and rear bumpers, grille and the Passat logo (now centered at the rear) have a new layout. In addition, new LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, LED fog lights and LED taillights provide the new model with a distinctive, memorable lighting profile. Lapiz Blue, Bottle Green and Sea Shell Gold exterior paint colors are also new to the Passat, and the wheel range has been expanded with four new 17-, 18- and 19-inch alloy wheel options. As a result of all these innovations, the model looks fresher and more authoritative, and at the same time remains true to its character.

More Technology

Thanks to the new generation of infotainment systems (MIB3), if desired, the new Volkswagen model can be constantly online and provide completely new functions and services to the driver and his companions. New assist systems, such as Travel Assist, increase safety and comfort and make the new model the first Passat, capable of moving at speeds of up to 210 km / h in partial assistance mode. The digital dashboard behind the wheel offers various types depending on the taste and needs of the driver, and the logic of function control combines modern solutions with the brand's classic intuitive ergonomics. As befits a Passat, the interior offers plenty of space and comfort, and the ergoComfort extra driver seat is a pleasure even on long journeys.

Confident and efficient on the road

As before, Passat impressively combines harmonious suspension comfort with good handling and impeccable stability on the road. The level of acoustic comfort is worthy of comparison with representatives of significantly higher price segments.

We were particularly impressed with the performance of the 2.0 horsepower 190 TSI engine. The price of a Passat with this drive is on average about BGN 6 lower compared to a TDI 000 variant with identical output and front-wheel drive. In addition to its cultivated ride, spirited acceleration and solid traction, the petrol engine manages to surprise with a value that we can easily define as "diesel" - while driving economically in a section that is very close in profile to the so-called standard route for the economical Passat 2.0 TSI showed that driving a car motor and sports Germany lacks 2.0%. Even more impressive is that even with a completely standard mixed-cycle driving style, including lots of overtaking, a fairly dynamic corner and about 4,5 km on the highway, the average consumption overall was just over six liters per hundred kilometers - for a gasoline car of a similar size and weight is an extremely respectable achievement. Otherwise, for people who drive very hard, the TDI diesels undoubtedly remain a significant proposition, both in terms of their even lower consumption and because of their high torque.

CONCLUSION

Thanks to the latest technologies of assistance and entertainment and information transfer, a large interior space, stylish design, excellent comfort, a wide selection of efficient transmissions and reasonable prices, Passat remains one of the leaders in its market segment.
