Scientist calculates ideal route for European tour
Traveling around Europe by car is a great idea for the perfect vacation, but it takes a long time. American computer science expert Randy Olson set out to solve this problem and charted the route of an ideal journey through the Old Continent.
It covers the maximum possible number of "50 tourist destinations in Europe", according to Business Insider. Olson's 45 points are distributed so that the movement between them is as short and efficient as possible.
Practical route
In the age of Google Maps, it doesn't seem very difficult to calculate the most practical route between four or five points. But when there are more than ten stops, the possible combinations increase dramatically. In fact, to calculate Olson's route without the special algorithms he uses, it will take you more years than the sun to turn into a red giant.
The list includes 45 stops - from Istanbul in the southeast to Bergen in the far northwest of Europe. The trip can take 14 days, Olson said, although it will take you at least three months to get around all the sights properly.
The length of the route is 26 km, which for a compact car with a gasoline engine and an average European gasoline price will cost you about 211 euros for fuel alone, excluding tolls.
If this seems too expensive, Olson suggests using his algorithm to create your own efficient route. To this end, he published his open source code on the Internet.
