Toyota Yaris 1.33 Dual VVT-i Sport (5 ат)

The famous naturalist lived too early to engage in motor sports, which, in all likelihood, would not be too close to him due to the devastating impact on nature. Maybe I would have pulled my beloved Yaris out of a pile of sheet metal, which in the updated version has more environmentally friendly engines as well as Stop-Start technology. This will be the subject of his research.

The appearance of the 2009 Yaris is so new that owners of the latest generation (2005-2009) will have to make a head-to-head comparison. New lighting is parked next to the old one (the headlights are bent in the lower half, the taillights have more whiteness and the turn signals are emphasized ..), new bumpers (with built-in "protections", the front ones with different slots and the area around the fog lights, and the last one with a different license plate space. badge) and a new, noticeably lower bonnet.

In fact, the changes are so subtle that they only become noticeable after a detailed examination, which otherwise won't take you as much time as Darwin spent on the Beagle. That an evolutionary successor to its predecessor is evident in the interior of the redesigned Yaris: the same low quality plastic (some competitors with the new Fiesta at the wheel teach the little Toyota a real lesson) with the highest average build quality and excellent build quality. a huge amount of storage space (toddler champion) with four closed drawers is still a Yaris hallmark.

Disadvantages of the Yaris include the sharp edge of the front door that can be quickly scratched, the lack of daytime running lights, the inconveniently located one-way trip computer control button and poor pedals.

The clutch has some kind of idle and weird grip, and with the accelerator pedal, the rubber mat covers the dent under the pedal so annoyingly that if you want to go full throttle, you have to press it as if you were stomping on a cigarette butt. ...

Did we already write that Yaris has an abnormal amount of storage space? They also include pockets on the backrests of the front (with equally poorly endowed side grip) seats and two useful corners in the middle of the dashboard, which received a darker metal imitation (on the Sport trim level) and a different upper design. surface (CD and MP3) and other, better edging of the air conditioning and ventilation knobs.

The gear lever now also knows the (coveted) sixth gear, and the precision and lightness are obviously inherited from its five-speed predecessor. We are surprised by the (standard) lack of a double bottom in the boot, which in the predecessor takes such good care of the distribution of liters of luggage compartment and serves as a flat bottom when the rear seat is lowered.

Toyota's excuse that the trunk is now larger is a bit shocking, as it is the same size as its predecessor when left in the garage with the easily removable double-bottom parts. Instead of a flat bottom, the new Yaris creates a step when the split backs are lowered!

Thanks to the longitudinally adjustable rear bench (each part can move 150 millimeters and the backrests are also adjustable by 10 degrees), the Yaris is a true spatial marvel at 3 meters. It is not uncommon for a giant to sit behind a passenger in the front seat and be surprised to find that it has plenty of head and knee room.

Well, in this scenario, the torso is correspondingly smaller, but when we put the children on the back bench, the torso grows accordingly. In terms of safety, we praise five airbags (including knees) and two curtains (starting with 998 or Stella), but criticize the fact that Yaris has to pay extra for all equipment except the best TS and TS Plus for the VSC. stabilization system.

Unfortunately, the Yaris is a car that lacks an important safety device, even at a price of 14 thousand rubles. We're also critical of the Yaris' equipment name, as we're expecting more from the Sport than various rims, orange "analogue" gauges taken from the TS, and additionally tinted windows, as well as a leather-wrapped shifter and steering wheel. .

The steering wheel is adjustable in height and depth, and the mirrors are powered by electricity, as are the front side windows. It will be for readers of the new Yaris who are interested in a toddler in combination with a 1, 0, 1, 4 or 1 liter engine. For those who are tempted by a French-made Japanese with 8-liter gasoline, we have two news. Good and bad.

The bad news is that the engine is no longer offered, but the good thing is the new 1-litre successor with up to 33 kilowatts (74 horsepower). The engine with variable valve timing and an interesting compression ratio (101:11) is 5 kilowatts more powerful, more economical and more environmentally friendly (1 gram less CO10 per kilometer) than its predecessor. At the intersection, when you are standing in front of a traffic light, it is so quiet that you get the feeling that it is turned off.

Well, the truth is that the engine does sleep, and that is taken care of by the stop-start system, which in the Yaris takes care of fuel economy in such scenarios.

In our test alone, the on-board computer found that we had spent almost an hour and a half in front of the red lights (under appropriate conditions such as sufficient engine warm-up, a properly charged battery, the gear lever in neutral, and a foot removed from the clutch pedal ...). It's good that we returned it, otherwise I would have written about days, months, years. ...

Interestingly, Toyota's system, which starts the engine very elegantly and quickly enough when the driver presses the clutch pedal (and shifts), also worked in cold weather at just above freezing temperatures. Our measurements, if we take into account the last gears (the previous 1.3 has the fourth and fifth, and the 1.33 has the fifth and sixth), showed that the new engine is more maneuverable, although we tested it with very low mileage. , and competes with a similar unit from other manufacturers.

When overtaking, accelerating and driving uphill with the Yaris loaded, regularly reach for the gear lever and start the engine (but not in fourth and fifth gears, and even more so in sixth gear in full economy mode) at speeds above 3.500 rpm ... (in sixth gear on the highway 140+ km / h) brings a higher noise level, but up to 130 km / h the engine is quite quiet.

The softer suspension makes the Yaris more suitable for quieter movements, where an average fuel consumption of less than six to seven liters is possible with an economical ride. The new engine maximizes mid-range performance and is very suitable for the Yaris.

evaluation

  • The 1,8-liter petrol engine is too weak and its 1,33-liter sibling is eager to jeopardize the throne occupied by the new 1,3-liter engine inherited from its XNUMX-liter predecessor as the best choice for the Yaris. The game also features a diesel that comes into play thanks to higher torque, even lower fuel consumption and more enthusiasm when driving uphill. We also note some doubts about the reliability of the stop-start system, but this is likely to be faced by the second owner of the upgraded Yaris.
