Grille test: Ford Tourneo 2.2 TDCi (103 kW) Limited

This is a marketing and psychological issue; who wants to drive or even travel in the van that Ford stands for Transit? But if you give it a different name, you get the feeling that they did something more for the comfort of passengers.

In the case of modern vans, as a rule, they are already very close to passenger cars in many respects, at least in terms of ease of driving and the (optional) equipment offered. Thus, the transformation into a more personal type of vehicle, also called a minivan, is not particularly difficult - although we would not like to imply that any slightly more resourceful mechanic can do it at home, in the garage. Vice versa.

Of course, it's hard to imagine that this nearly five-foot-long thing with a two-foot square front would be bought by anyone for their own personal use, unless they have six children. These types of vehicles are well suited for transporting people over short distances, abroad such services are called "shuttle" or after the domestic high-speed transport; when there are too few people for a large bus and when the distances are relatively short. Yet passengers need comfort.

That's why the Tourneo has plenty of headroom, huge knee room in all seats, and the trunk is also a huge, almost square-shaped opening. The access to the second bench is quite simple and easy, and in the third you need to squeeze through the hole made by the upside down right seat of the second bench - and this hole is also not very small.

It can be embarrassing that there is only one lamp in each row in the back and there are no pockets (well, really, nets on the backrests of the front seats) for boxes or electrical outlets. Probably much more important, the Tourneo has an efficient air conditioning system (although it's not automatic) and one opening above each second and third row seat that can be opened or closed individually and the air rotated or directed.

On the other hand, the driver and front passenger received a lot of boxes, but they are all too large for small items from their pockets. In addition, the appearance of the dashboard and its surroundings does not even remotely reach the recognizable and attractive exterior, and the gaps in some places (box lid) are also half a centimeter. And the audio system glows red, and the indicators (on-board computer screen) turn green, which does not start any of the important chapters, but this is also not pleasant.

Everything else is at least correct, if not very good from a driver's point of view. The steering wheel is quite flat, but this does not affect the driving comfort. The shift lever is close to the right hand and very good, if not excellent, according to Ford, the steering is quite precise, and the engine is the best mechanical part of this Tourne. That it's loud isn't its fault, it's its isolation (it's a minivan, not a luxury sedan, after all), but it's responsive at low revs and ready for 4.400rpm.

Boosting at such high speeds is pointless, as the overtaking characteristics at 3.500 are almost the same, and its torque is such that it can easily withstand both uphills on the road and the load of the car. Its maximum speed seems small, but it is also true that it can be achieved even uphill or when fully loaded.

Despite the unfavorable bodywork, a modern turbodiesel can be relatively economical, consuming just over eight liters per 100 kilometers during a smooth ride. An economical driving mode is also available to the driver, which is activated by the Eco button; then the Tourneo does not accelerate faster than a good 100 kilometers per hour, and in terms of economy it is also helped by an automatic engine stop when the vehicle is stopped and an arrow indicating when to shift up. And no matter how fast it is, the engine is unlikely to consume much more than 11 liters per 100 kilometers.

So this is Tourneo, a kind of transit designed to carry passengers and their luggage. Time has not yet caught up with him, but his life path is almost over. A new generation will appear in a few months ...

evaluation

  • Although it is easy to operate and powerful, it is primarily intended for businesses such as large taxis or small buses. The driver in it will not suffer at all, and if the trip is not too long, the passengers will also suffer. Lots of space and very good mechanics.
