Grille test: KIA Rio 1.4 CRDi EX Luxury

The Brazilian city was once known only for favelas and crime, but today many tourists can enjoy the beautiful beaches (do you know the word Copacabana?), Sleep in luxury hotels and admire the statue of Jesus. Have we already mentioned beautiful Brazilian women?

Kia Rio calls for comparison with the famous Brazilian city, which got its name by mistake, as the conquerors led by Amerigo Vespucci replaced the bay with an estuary. At Kia, growth was like a South American metropolis: at first an uninteresting car that could only be sold at a lower price and richer equipment, but now ... Even compared to the benchmark in the class, the Volkswagen Polo, it's just nice. It's nice, though for the test I had to subtract a little less than 15 thousand. Admittedly, it boasted rich equipment (EX Luxury is the richest equipment) and a 1,4-liter turbodiesel, but for the money you can still get a bigger car.

The engine is not a bump stop, but it is enough for a small Rio. It boasts common rail fuel injection with pressures of up to 1.800 bar, a variable geometry turbocharger and a standard diesel particulate filter. Featuring a six-speed manual transmission that pampers with precision and smooth shifting, it is worry-free even at highway speeds, and with a maximum torque of 220 Nm ranging from 1.750 to 2.750 rpm, overtaking more and more trucks in our market. ... there will be no problems with the roads. Acceptable consumption of about 6,3 liters, although calm drivers can save a few more children. But that would be at the expense of time-consuming routes, and so I would no doubt recommend the modest 1,1-liter CRDi with 55 kilowatts, which you can imagine for as little as 12.390 euros.

While we can only talk about the interior in a superlative degree (well, some only complained about the padded seats, which cause back pain on long journeys), the chassis wouldn't have 17-inch wheels. With the richest equipment, you get large and beautiful rims with low-profile tires that strongly strengthen the car and make it uncomfortable on bumpy roads. If you are ready to suffer for beauty ... The EX Luxury package includes a lot of equipment, from four airbags to additional side curtain airbags, from ESP stabilization system to air conditioning with ionizer, radio with USB connection, rain sensor, hands-free system, rear parking sensors, LED daytime running lights, aluminum pedals, smart key, cruise control, and more. Other than that last one, I would have saved a thousand straight away by opting for the EX Style package.

If rapids are a place in a stream or river that jumps over stones and boulders, then Rio is Korean rapids that completely skip rivals, not stones. From all sides.

evaluation

  • What we've known for a long time is true even of the smaller Rio: modern Kia's are really good cars. I dare not say that the Polo as a reference in the class is already under threat, but the difference between them is surprisingly small.
