At that time, there was (in this size and price class) something new, an intermediate link between a sedan and the previous intermediate link, a soft SUV or SUV. And even though it was a little unfinished, a little plastic, it succeeded because it had very few, if any, competitors. Nissan had a good estimate of how much would be enough for success, and Carlos Ghosn then confidently stated: "Qashqai will be the main driver of Nissan's sales growth in Europe." And he was not wrong.

But over the years, the class has grown, and Nissan has released a new generation. Because the competition is fierce, they knew it wasn't going to be that easy this time around - which is why the Qashqai is now more mature, masculine, efficient design and noticeable, in short, giving a more premium impression. Sharper lines and less rounded strokes also give the appearance that the humorous mess has become serious. Poba became a man (Juk, of course, remains a naughty teenager).

That they have adapted the design to the current guidelines of the brand is understandable, while at the same time the Qashqai now looks more masculine as well as more compact and comes across as more expensive than it actually is. ... If it had four-wheel drive and an automatic transmission, this test would be the most expensive Qashqai possible. But: most customers don't want to buy all-wheel drive and automatic transmission anyway. But they like a lot of gear and the Tekna label means you really won't miss it.

Large 550" color touch screen (and smaller but still high resolution LCD screen between gauges), full LED headlights, smart key, cameras for panoramic view around the car, automatic high beams, traffic sign recognition as standard Tekna equipment version - This is a set of equipment that is far from being included in the list of additional equipment of many brands. Add to that the Driver Assist package that comes with the test Qashqai and the safety picture is complete as it adds a blind spot monitoring system to warn of moving objects and monitor the driver's attention. And automatic parking, and the list (for this class of cars) is almost complete. The surcharge for this package is a modest XNUMX euros, but unfortunately you can only think of it in combination with Tekna's richest equipment package.

But in practice? The headlights are excellent, the parking assistance is efficient enough, and the collision warning is too sensitive and jittery, so there is no shortage of whistles even during normal city driving.

The feel in the cabin reflects the fact that the test Qashqai came close to the top of the scale in terms of equipment. The materials used work well (including the leather / Alcantara combination on the seats, which is part of the optional Style Package), the panoramic roof window gives the cabin an even more airy and spacious feel, the touches of the dashboard and center console are pleasing to the eye and well-being. Of course, it would be illogical to expect the Qashqai's interior to be on the same level as similar cars in the premium segment, but in reality it does not differ from them as much as one would expect.

While the Qashqai hasn't grown much from its predecessor (just a good inch in the crotch and a bit longer overall), the rear bench feels more spacious. This feeling is partly due to the fact that the longitudinal travel of the front seats is too short for the tallest drivers (which is a typical gimmick of Japanese manufacturers), and of course, some of them make better use of space. It's the same with the trunk: it's big enough, but again, no different from school habits. There is ample storage space here, which is also aided by the electric parking brake.

The Qashqai, of course, as is customary in modern cars, was created on one of the group's platforms - it shares it with a good pile of cars, from the Megane to the upcoming X-Trail. Of course, this also means that the engine the test car was powered by is one of the group's engines, more specifically the new 1,6-litre turbodiesel.

The Qashqai is not the first car we've tested on it - we've already tested it on the Megane and at the time we praised its agility but criticized the fuel economy. The Qashqai is the opposite: we have no doubt that it has a claimed 130 "horsepower", as the measured performance is close enough to the factory, but in everyday driving the engine is a little sleepy. Given that the Qashqai weighs almost no more than the Megane, Nissan engineers probably played around with the electronics a bit.

Such a Qashqai is not an athlete, but in truth: he is not even expected from him (if at all, let's just wait for some version of Nismo), and for everyday use, its low consumption is much more important. It's a shame the highway isn't a bit busier.

Chassis? Stiff enough that the car doesn't lean too much, but still soft enough that, despite the low-profile tires (the standard Tekna equipment wheels are 19-inch, which is worth considering due to the price of new tire sets), it absorbs the bumps of vegan Slovenian tires well enough. roads. There is a bit more vibration in the back seat, but not much enough that you won't hear complaints from passengers. That the car has only front-wheel drive (because so far with the new Qashqai we can expect that the proportion of all-wheel drive cars will remain in the minority), the Qashqai only gives problems when starting off rough from a slightly smoother surface - then, especially if the car is turning, for example, when starting from an intersection, the inner wheel turns into neutral rather abruptly (due to the torque of the diesel engine) and with a slight rebound. But in such cases, the ESP system is decisive, and in the vast majority of cases, the driver (unless he has a stubbornly heavy right foot) feels nothing, except perhaps a jerk of the steering wheel. This one is just right and offers ample feedback, certainly by crossover or SUV standards, and not in the way you'd expect from a sports sedan, for example.

Thirty-one thousandth (about as much as such a Qashqai costs according to the price list) is, of course, a lot of money, especially not for an oversized crossover without all-wheel drive, but on the other hand, it must be admitted. that such a Qashqai offers a lot of money for his money. Of course, you can also consider one for half the money (1.6 16V Basic with the usual special discount), but then forget about the comfort and convenience that any of the more expensive versions can offer.

Overall rating (344/420)

  • The new generation of Qashqai proves that Nissan has well thought out how to continue on the path charted by the first generation.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Fresh, vibrant touches give Qashqai its distinctive look.

  • Interior (102/140)

There is enough space both in front and in the back, the trunk is average.

  • Engine, transmission (53

    / 40)

The engine is economical and, moreover, quite smooth, but, of course, from 130 "horsepower" miracles in work should not be expected.

  • Driving performance (60

    / 95)

The fact that Qasahqai is a crossover does not hide when it is on the road, but it is comfortable enough for everyday use.

  • Performance (26/35)

A well-designed gearbox allows for idling when overtaking, only at higher highway speeds the diesel simply explodes.

  • Security (41/45)

The five-star rating for the crash test and the many electronic safety devices give Qashqai many points.

  • Economy (49/50)

Low fuel consumption and the low price of the entry-level model are trump cards, it is a pity that the warranty conditions are not better.
