All-wheel drive, which the driver can forget about until ...

You should not take what has been said literally, if the four-wheel drive was so inconspicuous that it would still be to dig in the snow on the spot, of course, it would not be good. It is important that it is subtle in the way it works, only that the driver does not notice that it worked. The car just goes wherever the driver wants. Meanwhile, such and other "magic" happens in the mechanics, but the driver knows nothing about it. The position of the car on the road does not change noticeably, there is no turning of the wheels in empty space, there is no "light show" between the sensors. It just goes.

All-wheel drive Sharan (meaning the nameplate 4Motion) with a 140-horsepower diesel engine is a typical example of such a machine. If it were not for the 4Motion label, the driver would not have dreamed that the car had four-wheel drive. Only on a snowy (or, for example, dirty) road could I notice that the car was just moving. And it goes. And it goes ... And on wet, slippery pavement, the ESP light does not light up when starting off, even when cornering. Again: imperceptible.

Haldex Clutch, which is the essence of this drive, it just makes itself and transfers some of the torque to the rear wheels in time. Make no mistake: All-wheel drive here is not designed for sportiness or off-roading. It stands next to "just in case", so you do not need to worry about whether the last kilometer (or ten) before the ski slope will be snowy or not, whether you will come to your mother-in-law's hill by car. or on foot ... And she falls into such a role.

Carp as Carp: Family is useful

What about the rest of Sharan? There is absolutely no coincidence in this. That it could be the outermost seat in the middle row (yes, test Sharan was seven-seater) by raising a part of the seat (by adjusting the side supports on it) and two upholstered "horns" replacing the classic pillows for child car seats (instead of the classic seats of groups 2 and 3), will reduce the cost of purchasing child seats, electric opening of the side sliding door and the tailgate is even more welcome when your hands are full, folding or stretching the third row of seats is a one-hand job, but underneath them, even when folded, there's little room for (say) a thin laptop bag, and the Parking System can measure more than just the rest. space in front of and behind Sharan, but also next to it. And the air conditioner, because this is a car with six passengers in addition to the driver, is three-zone.

For 4Motion, forget about DSG

A two-liter turbodiesel with 103 kilowatts or 140 “horsepower” is an old friend. It deserves the label "enough" for use in Sharan, as it's on the highway more than on the edge of what could still be described as acceptable. Almost two tons of weight (including the driver) and a large front surface on their own, and the extra drag caused by the all-wheel drive in the mechanics shows up in both performance and fuel consumption, which stopped at just under eight liters in the test.

Apart from slightly higher fuel consumption, the 4motion label has another drawback: you can't imagine a two-speed DSG gearbox with all-wheel drive. It is a pity that such a Sharan would be almost perfect with him.

evaluation

  • Of course, such a motorized Sharan is not a race car, but you can be sure that this is a car that will get you further than most moderately fuel-efficient minivans - even when driving conditions are treacherously slippery.
