Test: Jaguar XE 20d (132 kW) Prestige

This, of course, should come as no surprise, since Jaguar is an English brand after all. This is true, as is the fact that since 2008 they have been owned by Indians, in particular Tata Motors. If you now wave your hand and speak negatively, do not overdo it: Tata Motors is the 17th largest automobile company in the world, the fourth largest truck manufacturer and the second largest bus manufacturer. Which, of course, means that the company knows how to serve the automotive industry. With the takeover in 2008, they did not make the mistake that is typical of many such cases. They didn't impose their employees, they didn't impose their designers, and they didn't impose radical changes. Jaguar remains English, at least in terms of management and designers.

Jaguar has nothing to do with the Indian Tato other than the owners who have invested enough money to breathe normally and start building new and own cars. Why your own? Prior to the takeover, Jaguar was also owned by a major Ford. But in their case, the brand was not abandoned by excessive independence, as Jaguar cars shared many parts of the car with Ford cars. One such example was certainly the X-type, the predecessor to the current XE model. Its design was in the style of Jaguar cars, but it shared (too) many components with the then Ford Mondeo. Leaving aside the basic platform, for which many car owners do not know whose and what it is, inside there are even the same switches and buttons as in the Ford Mondeo. A Jaguar owner simply cannot afford it, and rightly so.

It's time for a successor. With it, they have big plans for Jaguar (or Tati Motors, if you will), and certainly a lot more than Ford had with the then X-type model. While it's not the largest pet car, Jaguar claims the XE is their most advanced and most efficient sedan to date. With a CD drag coefficient of 0,26, it is also the most aerodynamic. They put effort and all the knowledge they have into it, and in some parts they have undoubtedly succeeded. The all-new bodywork is almost entirely made of aluminium, while the doors, hood and tailgate are made of high strength, fully galvanized steel. The design of the car summarizes some of the features of already known Jaguar models, but the design remains quite fresh. Something that is fresh, with some details such as the nose and rear of the car and taillights, impresses many. The car once again gives a feeling of sophistication and prestige. Even too much. Casual observers, who did not hesitate to ask what kind of car it was, praised its shape and impression of prestige, but at the same time added that this car was not at all expensive, since it probably costs more than 100 thousand euros. Error! Firstly, of course, because this car does not belong to such a high price range and its competitors (unless it is a supersport version) do not exceed such amounts, and secondly, of course, because Jaguar with some models has long ceased to exist . too expensive. After all, the numbers show it: the base Jaguar is available for less than $40. Basically, the test cost 44.140 euros, but the additional equipment increased it by more than 10 euros. The final sum is not small, but still it is almost half the imaginary sum of an uneducated observer. On the other hand, car connoisseurs may be disappointed.

Especially since Jaguar indicates that the XE will be their weapon in the fight against the Audi A4, BMW Troika, Mercedes C-Class, etc. If there are no problems with the design, its sympathy is a relative concept, with the interior everything is different. This is very different from the competitors listed above. It seems modest, reserved, almost an Englishman. Otherwise, it sits well in the car, the steering wheel, which is pleasantly thickened, lies pleasantly in the hand. A bit confusing is its center section, which works too plastically, even the switches, which are otherwise logically placed, could be different. The view of the large sensors is good, but between them there is a central screen, which again offers a modest amount of information. Of course, the gear lever is also different. As is the case with some Jaguars, there is actually none at all, and instead there is a large round button. For many, this will be difficult to master at first, but practice is the work of the master. Unfortunately, on summer days, the metal border around it gets so hot that it's (too) hot to handle. However, since we are different people, I believe that the interior will also seem great to many (perhaps older drivers and passengers), in the same way that the British drink tea and not coffee during the day. In the engine? The XNUMX-litre turbodiesel is new and there's no complaining about its power, but it's loud enough or its noise isolation is too modest.

This also affects the operation of the start-stop system when the engine is (too) restarted. The test car had its more powerful version, producing 180 "horses". They were nothing more than English restrained and sophisticated. If desired, they can easily stand on their hind legs, bounce and wriggle. The XE, although with a 100-liter diesel engine, can be very fast not only on level ground, but also in corners. It is assisted by Jaguar Drive Control, which offers additional driving modes programs (Eco, Normal, Winter and Dynamic) and therefore adjusts the response of the steering wheel, accelerator pedal, chassis, etc. But the engine is not only sharp, together with the Eco program it can also be economical, as shown by our standard scheme, where the engine only consumes 4,7 liters of diesel fuel per XNUMX kilometers.

The Jaguar XE also offers a range of safety assistance systems that make it easier for the driver to drive and, above all, track some of the vehicle's faults. When we look at the whole car in this way, it becomes clear that we cannot ignore it. However, in one breath you need to know where it comes from. It seems to have been created for the tranquil English countryside. If you have been to England and its countryside (London does not count), then you know what I mean. The difference, which at first pleases, then confuses, and then, after sober reflection, again becomes interesting to you. It's the same with the new XE. Some of the details are confusing at first, but once you get used to them, you'll love them. In any case, the Jaguar XE is different enough that its driver doesn't get lost in an average "prestigious" German car. This is also, probably, delicious, like tea at five, not coffee.

Overall rating (355/420)

  • Jaguar goes back to its roots with the XE. Typical Englishman, you can write.

    Better or worse.

  • Exterior (15/15)

Appearance is the main advantage of XE.

  • Interior (105/140)

The salon is spacious enough and elegantly distinguished. Athletes may not like this.

  • Engine, transmission (48

    / 40)

The engine and chassis are (too) loud and we're not complaining about the drive and transmission.

  • Driving performance (61

    / 95)

It is difficult to say that such a car is designed for fast driving, it is calmer and more elegant. His drivers are usually like that.

  • Performance (30/35)

A pretty decently powerful engine that can be above average in terms of fuel economy.

  • Security (41/45)

There are only a few cars left in the Spanish countryside with many security systems.

There is no Jaguar among them.

  • Economy (55/50)

That being said, the engine can be extremely economical, but in general, such a Jaguar is an expensive car, mainly because of the loss in value.
