Test: Hyundai Kona 1.0 T-GDI Impression

If you're still wondering where Hyundai got the name for this car from, triathlon definitely means nothing to you. Kona is a kind of triathlon capital, a settlement on the largest Hawaiian island, where the most famous annual ironman begins and ends. Triathlon is just about such a crossover or. mixing different racing genres, for example, the Kona crossover between a passenger car and an SUV. So, between the two most popular Hyundais such as the i30 and Tucson. Even Kon's character is somewhere in between. It's like a look that gives the feel of a beefy, beefed up yet bolder i30. However, the Kona is not as tall as the Tucson and the seating position is also much lower. But still higher than the i30 (by 7 cm), which gives the feeling that we have a better view of the traffic. According to everything described, it is among the modern and fashionable cars.

Being a direct relative of the i30, it is also very similar in size, but still shorter (17,5 cm). It is slightly taller than the i30, and otherwise almost identical, but in all respects the i30 has a little more space. In fact, this also applies to the trunk. According to Kona specs, it is 17 liters less, but no less useful. With the Kona, suitcases and bags do not need to be lifted as high as above the bottom of the tailgate of the i30. Otherwise, a similar match can be found in ergonomics and usability.

Konin's designers have slightly altered the design features of individual dashboard elements in the interior with a few minimalistic touches, but it's also noticeable that Hyundai used the same source. However, the approach to interior design is definitely fresh, there are more attempts at otherness, there is the addition of color shades - seams, inserts, borders or fittings (for example, seat belts in the color of other details, all for an additional 290 euros). There are no digital gauges in the Konina's interior, but with the best gauges, the user gets a nice help - a projection screen over the gauges (HUD). The see-through plate system, on which the driver receives all the important driving data, is certainly a welcome addition to driving, as there is no need to look down the road and look for traffic data on the sensors. In addition, the large eight-inch touchscreen (optional in Krell's Multimedia package) is large enough to convey information well, and with a few buttons on the sides, it allows direct control of some of the rugged infotainment's menus.

In general, with the Kona, it should be added that it is necessary to reconsider and choose a deeper intervention in the pocket, because certain richer equipment levels (Premium or Impression) offer really rich equipment in all respects; however, if the car is equipped with a similar engine to the one in our tested Kona, that is, a three-cylinder thousand cubic meter turbo petrol engine, the price with the Impression equipment will still be slightly less than 20 thousand.

When we talk about equipment, at least the most important points need to be mentioned: we can start with the infotainment system, where communication with Apple or Android smartphones (like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto) is also exemplary. Kona also provides wireless inductive charging for phones, in our case a better audio system (Krell) was installed next to the navigation device. There is also a wide range of safety accessories, including collision avoidance with pedestrian recognition, lane keep assist, auto-dimming LED headlights, driver and blind spot monitoring, and cross-traffic. Controlled movement program. It is impossible not to mention the descent on a slippery track, heated seats and steering wheel.

The Kona's ride comfort is moderately satisfying, thanks to its large bikes with a rather sporty look. It responds to bumps in the road. Hyundai also forgot about additional isolation of various noise sources from under the chassis; already the dampness on the road delivered unusual additional sound “pleasures” that came to the car's interior. Still, the solid road holding is commendable, and in terms of handling, the Kona has already taken care of the appropriate steering response. The braking capabilities are also commendable.

The turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine has proven to be quite solid in terms of performance, but not in terms of economy and fuel consumption. The overall average fuel consumption in our test is pretty solid, but we didn't put much stress on the car in extreme conditions, and the city driving was less. In any case, the surprisingly high mileage on our standard lap showed that this three-cylinder was not among the thrifty ones.

The mediocrity claim still applies to many parts of the car's design, but you can still find enough special features in the Kona that we can say that it is a very interesting alternative and that it is very different from the i30. This is even more true for the more powerful version of the Konin engine. Somehow it seems that with a more powerful engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, the impression of the whole car could be completely different. However, I have to admit that we didn't miss out on all-wheel drive for normal use on the Kona at all.

So can Kona somehow resemble the place where she got her name from? There are many completely ordinary people who daily work their way through ordinary life with energy, almost like some "steel man" who can also do triathlon in Hawaii.

But it is also true that if you are in Hawaii, you are probably more kuuul.

Overall rating (431/600)

  • An attractive and modern car with a reasonable price, but with some less convincing characteristics.

  • Cab and trunk (70/110)

Aside from the interesting looks, the Kona's spaciousness and usability are commendable.

  • Comfort (88

    / 115)

Comfortable enough, quite ergonomic, with adequate connectivity, but almost no noise isolation from under the chassis

  • Transmission (46

    / 80)

The engine is still powerful enough, not an example of flexibility, and the precision of the gear lever is disappointing.

  • Driving performance (73

    / 100)

    Good road position, good brakes!

  • Security (92/115)

    Robust hardware with safety accessories

  • Economy and environment (62

    / 80)

Fuel consumption is unconvincing, but the Kona's price point is certainly very convincing. He also gets a lot of important points with a guarantee.

Driving pleasure: 4/5

  • Very satisfactory, mainly due to road stability and effective brakes.
