New DS line from Citroën

It is not often that a car brand presents so many innovations in such a short time that complement its core offering. But with the new DS range, Citroën also made a breakthrough in design: the DS5 is both elegant and sporty on the road. attracts attentionbut above all, it exudes dynamism.

Also worth noting is Citroën's courage to launch an all-new DS-branded program. With it, they target customers who have not been able to reach them with their current offer. Their main characteristic is that they are more demanding and willing to pay more for what they get.

So the DS5 is aiming in that direction. After taking a close look at the look and finding that the designers accept it Jean-Pierre Plueju managed a big shot, the appearance of the cabin is very close to the ideal of excellent shape. But here, for the first time, it turns out that designers had to deal with some of the design features that were available to implement the DS5 idea.

Form or usability?

In everyday use, we most overlook the simplest things - for example, storage space... Upon closer inspection, we discover that under the surface (noble plastic or leather interior) a technical proposal is partially hidden, which is nothing more than Peugeot 3008... But we have to be careful about how much Citroën actually borrows from the Peugeot 3008, as well as which cars compete with this new Citroën.

Along with the Audi A4?

Citroën claims they can park the car next to the Audi A4. But there is a slight misunderstanding in the middle because, at least to the undersigned, it seems like a more suitable rival to the Audi A5 Sportback. If you agree with such a comparison, then the DS5v is at a disadvantage for everyone, because it is 20 centimeters shorter in length (in fact, than the A4 and A5). However, in order to compare the DS5 with its competitors, I think it is better to take the well-motorized and equipped versions of the other three. Lancy Delte, Renault Megane GrandTour in Volvo V50.

Certainly, this search for similar DS5 cars is an interesting proof that they are very similar. own car, which we should consider useful for its designers - because in today's world of fierce competition between manufacturers, it is also commendable if they offer you what you consider not an imitation, but looking for something new!

The good thing about the DS5 is that, unlike previous Citroëns models, it brings a lot of new and sophisticated design to the interior, which is nostalgic for the memory of Spachke and Toad, who were most lacking in the latest creations of this brand!

Like on an airplane

Not everything in the cabin can be considered lucky, because the general impression when you get behind the wheel is such that lack of space. But on the other hand, it is also an expression of the “fusion” of the driver and the car, since it seems that the designers wanted to create a kind of cockpit, like in an airplane, also with the operation of the roof controls and three whole glass roofs. It's also true, however, that a four-and-a-half-foot-long car like the DS5 is still not roomy enough for rear-seat passengers, but it satisfies at least luggage space.

The Citroën DS line was created with the idea of offering customers something more and charging a little more for it. How it will be in the end, in five or more years, when and whether the novelty will receive the expected recognition, we still cannot draw a conclusion. But I can write that the attempt to offer more deserves praise. Of all three models, the DS5 also makes the most "noble" impression with these two initials, a premium that many would like to add to their models.

Quality impression is good because of the truth careful work (at least this was our example of a tried and tested machine). Apart from the careful workmanship, the quality of the substances used is also completely satisfactory. In particular, leather seat covers, the same applies to the plastics used.

A sports steering wheel?

A signed tester wished for a little less enthusiasm for design and execution. steering wheel... If the car has the same number of steering wheel turns from one extreme position to the other as the DS5 (almost three), then a partially "cut off" steering wheel seems completely unnecessary, since it makes it difficult to grip in tight turns.

This pursuit of seeming "sportiness" has recently become very popular among automotive designers, but is completely unnecessary. Unless the designers - no offense - dedicate it to these pot-bellied drivers!

The comfortably leather-wrapped steering wheel is also decorated with an accessory resembling metal marquetry on the “cut off” part, but in winter this cold plastic turned out to be an additional drawback - it drives into the fingers of a driver without gloves! Conclusion: too many design trips in an unusual direction is bad. The above oddities in some way confirm the rule that it is very difficult to find perfect cars completely without minor flaws.

200 'horses' from the turbocharger

Steering wheel episode aside, the DS5 is a very pleasant and useful piece of modern automotive engineering. This is especially true for chassiswhich pairs very well with the powerful 200 horsepower turbocharger. The engine is known to us from a fairly large number of different models that we have already tested. If we directly compare the results of this engine in two relatives, DS4 and DS5, then in the latter it is slightly felt that it must move a large mass (by a good 100 kg).

But the engine doesn't seem to be a problem, it just behaves less unrestrained when accelerating. Since the wheelbase of the DS5 is 12 centimeters longer, the car is more pleasant to drive, there are fewer acceleration problems or less effort required to steer, and it has much better directional control, which also applies to corners.

Compared to the DS4, the larger DS is more mature, sovereign while driving. In addition, comfort is much more acceptable than with the DS4, which sometimes gives the feeling of a bouncing stallion when driving on too wrinkled asphalt, which the DS5 does not experience even on the most wrinkled asphalt.

How much does it even cost? We don't know (yet)

Finally, I should pay a little more attention to the cost of the new DS5. Here we go into the unknown in our Citroën. He came to our editorial office early, even before sales began anywhere in the world (including France). Exclusivity but - we can also boast of this.

Sales on the Slovenian market in early April are still far away. The consequence of this, of course, is the problem that potential fans, who have already had enough photos and words in our magazine to make a purchase decision, still cannot come up with a definitive answer - how much this Citroën will actually cost. DS5. So we can't rate it by evaluating if it will be worth the price, apart from a good ride experience and even better in terms of looks. Considering the quality of the materials and other automotive features that it combines, it definitely deserves high marks.

But a decision has to be made about how much it's likely to cost - given how Citroën has priced the smaller DS's amount, which hides a lot of similarities under a completely different tin shell. We expect the DS5 to be three to four thousand euros more expensive than the DS4, which means that its selling price, based on the range of engines and equipment that we learned, will be about 32.000 euros.

So let me end it like this: The DS5 is the most beautifully designed Citroën in a decade.but not convincing enough about the spaciousness of the cabin. Rich equipment and a good impression of quality and end products will also result in a price that we at Citroën are not used to. But DS5 seems to offer a lot!

Face to face - Alyosha Mrak

It seems to me that the DS5 is happier than the DS4, although the DS3 is still closest to me. Well, from what I've heard, so are the clients. While I love the design and feel good behind the wheel (just look at the equipment list and you'll at least partially understand why), there were a few things that bothered me. Firstly, the chassis and steering repeatedly transmit vibrations that Citroen should not be proud of, and secondly, the gear lever is too big even for men's palms, and thirdly, there is really little space on the back bench.

Face to face - Dusan Lukic

Yes, these are the real Dees. Despite the manual transmission (which would have been a better match for an automatic), it's comfortable, sleek, yet useful and, just as important, superbly engineered. It is pleasant to sit in and pleasant to drive in. This is how all Citroëns should be, especially: the DS4 should be (but not so) ...
