Test: Audi A7 Sportback 3.0 TDI (180 kW) Quattro

Only there they said that it should be practical. Thus, the 5 GT was based on the 7 Series (for more interior space) and received a station wagon rear end. Appearance ... Let's be careful: opinions are different.

In the Audi they (blue) were waiting to see what the rivals were doing. They then took the moves of the new eight, the platform intended for the upcoming six, and pulled the form in the direction Mercedes took. So, a four-door coupe. In addition to the trunk - it does not open in a coupe, but as in station wagons, including the rear window. This is the gift of practicality from Audi.

Why are prestigious brands reluctant to open this type of trunk (or why Mercedes chooses to avoid it): Not only is it a little more difficult to ensure body rigidity and light weight, but also because every time it is opened, live content in the rear seats blows around heads (hot or cold), which is supposedly not quite a prestigious feeling. But let's be realistic: users of this type of car drive themselves and therefore sit in front. Those looking for a chauffeured limousine will choose the right vehicle, and each of these three brands offers prestigious limousines, preferably with a long wheelbase, designed for such customers. And once we solve this dilemma, we can get busy for a week.

The first impression is positive: if the future A6 is built at the same level as the A7, sales of the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class could be hit hard. The new platform has a longer wheelbase (by about seven centimeters) and 291 centimeters ensures that the seat is comfortable both front and rear. Of course, it is not expected to have as much rear room as in the long-wheelbase sedan (or as much as in the BMW 5 GT, which was created by design for a larger XNUMX class), but a Family of four (or a brush of not too spoiled businessmen) will travel without difficulty. Four-zone air conditioning ensures that every passenger feels good, and of course the fifth door in the back also includes (the third, with a small part right on the left) a folding rear bench.

The shape of the interior, of course, does not differ from what we are used to at Audi. Of course, that doesn't mean the Audi designers haven't done their job - most of the moves are new, but there's so much recognizability in them that even an outsider will quickly realize that they're sitting in one of the most prestigious Audis. This is evidenced by the materials: leather on the seats and doors and wood on the dashboard, doors and center console. Matte lacquered wood prevents excessive glare reflections.

In the center of the dashboard is a large retractable color LCD screen that, together with a controller in the center console, allows you to control almost all of the vehicle's functions. Audi's MMI has been a model for some time now in how to solve control problems with an increasing number of functions. Navigation can also use Google Maps, you only need to activate the data connection on the mobile phone you connect via Bluetooth. That the system can then find not only the hotel (and therefore no longer has to enter each letter by turning the knob, the touchpad allows typing with a finger), but his phone (and call him) probably does not needs.

However, we attributed a small disadvantage to navigation: the data about the restriction on the road section you are driving on is displayed only on the central screen, and not (or mainly) on the screen between the sensors ... It is very Transparent. The car can also display a picture from the surcharge system Night Vision. If you are an electronic age child, you can easily operate it without even looking through the windshield. When viewers manage to combine this with the head-up display (HUD), it becomes invincible, especially since it shows you pedestrians hiding in the dark long before you see them in the headlights.

The list of optional equipment (and at the same time very desirable equipment) also includes active cruise control with a start-stop function, which can stop if the car in front of you stops, and also start if the car in front of you does it. Automatic switching between long and darkened (otherwise directional xenon) headlights is also encouraged.

Such an A7 can be a very fast car. The combination of a six-cylinder turbodiesel, dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive on paper is not in itself a guarantee of sportiness when the driver wants it, but even here it turns out that Audi has hit the spot. ... The adjustable chassis is a little stiffer than the biggest sedans of this brand, but not too stiff, and with the suspension at the Comfort mark Slovenian roads also give the impression that they are good. If you choose dynamics, the suspension, like the steering wheel, gets stiffer. The result is a sportier and more fun driving position, but experience shows that you will return to comfort later than before.

The gearbox, as usual with dual-clutch gearboxes (the S tronic, according to Audi), does both well, and is only slightly affected by very slow maneuvers such as side parking on a slope. In such positions, the classic automatic with a torque converter is still better. It is also interesting that the number on the display repeatedly indicates that the car starts to move in second gear, but we could not shake the feeling that he sometimes helped himself for a moment in first gear at the beginning ...

The 7-litre turbodiesel convinces with its low weight (use of light materials). Sitting behind the wheel, the driver sometimes (especially on highways) gets the feeling that the car is “not moving”, but looking at the speedometer, he quickly gives out that this is disturbing the driver, not the car. Up to speeds of more than two hundred, such an A250 detects and stops only at (electronically limited) XNUMX kilometers per hour. And if you're even more demanding, just grab the XNUMX-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Only then do not expect good consumption - with a good ten and a half liters of diesel, a gasoline engine cannot compete.

And then it remains only to answer the question for whom such an A7 is intended. For those who have outgrown the A8? For those who want the A6 but don't want the classic shape? For those for whom the A5 is too small? There is no clear answer. The owner of the 7 quickly admitted after a short test that the 8 is just an 6 and the A5 is no smaller A6 but a different AXNUMX. For those who think differently about the AXNUMX, it will be too expensive. And there are those who could get a more equipped AXNUMX. If it were a station wagon, there would be no competition, and so it quickly turns out that (as with competitors) most of those customers who don't want a station wagon don't want a two-door coupe and don't like limousines. will choose it. Well, yes, the experience of the competition shows that there are not so few of them.

Face to face: Vinko Kernc

Without a doubt: you sit in it and feel great. You drive and drive, great again. They are fascinated by mechanics, the environment, materials, equipment.

There will be buyers, of course. Those who should have it because of their position in society, as well as those who do not have a suitable position, but are still convinced that they should have it. Neither one nor the other needs it. It's just a picture. Audi is not to blame for anything, it only responds intelligently to the requests of buyers with sufficient purchasing power.

Overall rating (367/420)

  • In addition to the new A7, the A8 is currently an Audi model that demonstrates the brand's technological advancement. And it works great for him.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Excellent in the front, questionable in the back, and overall, perhaps a little too close to cheaper models.

  • Interior (114/140)

There is enough space for four, the air conditioner sometimes freezes during dew.

  • Engine, transmission (61

    / 40)

Neither the three-liter six-cylinder nor the twin-clutch S tronic disappoints.

  • Driving performance (64

    / 95)

Fairly light weight and all-wheel drive is one that deserves to bet on sports from time to time.

  • Performance (31/35)

3.0 TDI is mostly average - TFSI is already more powerful, we drool on the S7.

  • Security (44/45)

The list of standard and optional equipment is long, and both have a variety of safety accessories.

  • Economy (40/50)

Consumption is good, the price (mainly due to surcharges) is less. They say there is no free lunch.
