Test drive Subaru WRX STI: Main power

While the WRX STI has remained true to itself in its new outfit, there are some changes in chassis and price. First impressions.

At first glance, it seems that light body touches are the only thing that distinguishes the new version of the WRX STI from its predecessor. The study of the technical data of the car also does not reveal fundamental innovations. Under the hood of the European version of the model, a 2,5-liter boxer turbo engine with 300 hp continues to work. and 407 Nm of maximum torque. Drive to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h takes 5,2 seconds. Auto? Dual clutch gearbox? While Subaru is far from such technological solutions.

Apparently, the Japanese did not see the need for changes in the dual drive system - it again works according to the established recipe, namely, based on a center differential, a front differential lock, a Torsen rear differential and electronic torque vectoring on both axles. The official average fuel consumption is slightly reduced from 10,5 to 10,4 l / 100 km. But where is the real news? The answer is simple - mostly under the hull.

For example, steering responses have become much more precise and stiffer. A steering wheel that wobbles too much at times is also history. The chassis is also tuned for greater agility.

Lower base price

Thicker crossmembers and thicker crossmembers minimize unwanted body movements in a particularly sporty driving style. Thanks to its sharper acceleration response, the sporty twin-drive model is now even more energetic than before. The ability to drive effectively with the doors open is maintained and satisfactory driving comfort must be added to it. Other news? Yes, the wheelbase increased by 2,5 centimeters, the cargo volume increased by 40 liters and the base price reduced by 8000 euros, which is 45 euros on the German market.
