At the Geneva Motor Show, Fuji Heavy Industries, the Japanese manufacturer Subaru, unveiled a revolutionary boxer turbodiesel engine.
The Subaru Boxer Turbo Diesel engine is the world's first diesel unit with this design. In design and manufacture, Subaru took full advantage of the boxer's opposing cylinders, low center of gravity, high strength, and low noise and vibration levels, eliminating the need for a balance shaft.
Fuel is supplied to the high-pressure cylinders thanks to the Common Rail system. Due to the special design, many parts, such as the combustion chamber, are specially developed. The electronics for monitoring and controlling the motor are also individually developed. The design of the unit corresponds to the general structure of the vehicle, which ensures compact dimensions.
Subaru Boxer Turbo Diesel will partner with the patented Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, which will further facilitate and improve vehicle performance.
Models with the revolutionary Subaru Boxer Turbo Diesel will hit the European market in 2008.
