SsangYong Tivoli 1.6 e-XGi Comfort

SsangYong is one of the most exotic car brands. Even his journey from a truck manufacturer to a car manufacturer is just beginning. The Tivoli is their first more modern and by far the smallest machine to date. It was conceived after the Japanese conglomerate Mahindra bought this Japanese factory through bankruptcy proceedings in 2010. Now he has also agreed to buy traditional Italian design house Pininfarine.

Mahindra and SsangYong admit that "some" Italian design house helped them develop the Tivoli. Based on current developments, we can guess what kind of help they used at Tivoli. This is one of the reasons why its appearance (exterior and interior) is very interesting, it is definitely "striking", although not everyone is convinced. The appearance of the Tivoli is unusual enough that we can attribute it to many people thinking about buying. Another reason to buy is definitely the price, as SsangYong charges just over four thousand euros for its base model (Base), a crossover just over four meters long.

Anyone who has a very rich package, the Comfort label and a 1,6-liter petrol engine costs two thousand more, and the list of all the equipment that the customer receives is already convincing. There are even rides that only SsangYong offers. Most interesting was the combination of the three automatic air conditioner memory settings. If the driver is familiar with the operating instructions when taking over, he will be able to cope with the settings as well. The use of materials in the cabin, especially the black piano lacquer on the dashboard, also makes a relatively solid impression. Closer inspection reveals less convincing details, but overall, the Tivoli's interior is solid enough.

Those who are looking for a suitable space of relatively short length will be satisfied. For the official indication of 423 liters of volume, we cannot put our hands on fire because the measurement was carried out in accordance with the European comparable standard. However, it seems to be a satisfying size to store enough luggage even if we take all five seats in the cabin. With rich equipment, we lacked precise positioning of the driver's seat, since the seat is not adjustable in height, and the steering wheel does not move in the longitudinal direction. Tivoli is new construction throughout. This also applies to both available engines. The gasoline engine that powered our test sample does not appear to be quite the latest design.

Unfortunately, the importer was also unable to provide data on the power and torque curve. We can hear and feel that the engine does not develop convincing torque at lower revs, it runs at slightly higher revs. But peak torque of 160 Nm at 4.600 rpm is not a convincing achievement, and this is evident in both measured acceleration and fuel economy. In addition, the engine becomes unpleasantly noisy at higher revs. Like the engine, the chassis of the SsangYong light car seems to be getting its first experience too. The comfort is not the most convincing, but it cannot be praised for its location on the road. Fortunately, when you try to go too fast, the electronic brake gets in the way of cornering, so at least here the car won't cause too many problems for those who are too fast or too careless.

We have no information that EuroNCAP has already conducted test collisions. However, the Tivoli will definitely not be able to get the highest score because the availability of electronic security devices is limited. ABS and ESP are approved for sale in the EU anyway, and the latter is not listed by Tivoli. Last but not least, this applies to tire pressure monitoring - TPMS, but SsangYong does not offer this equipment at all (Base). In addition to two airbags for driver and passenger, the more equipped version has at least a side airbag as well as a side curtain. The Tivoli definitely stands out in that it offers enough comfort and equipment for a car in the lower price range.

While others have to pay extra for solid and rich hardware, the opposite seems to be the case with Tivoli: there is already a lot of hardware in the base price. But then something else happens to the one who chooses the car. After just a few miles, he finds himself driving a rather outdated car. So he wants the SsangYong to give the SsangYong the feeling of a modern car at an extra cost: a quieter ride, more responsive grip, a weaker engine, smoother brakes, more steering wheel contact with the road. However, none of this can be purchased from Tivoli. Also in the near future, a diesel engine and even four-wheel drive are promised. Unfortunately, we cannot expect a product made in Korea to behave like a car even during use, not just under observation!

Overall rating (299/420)

  • The SsangYong Tivoli is just the start of this Korean manufacturer's updated specs, so the car feels unfinished.

  • Exterior (12/15)

    Nice and modern look.

  • Interior (99/140)

Spacious and well organized, with suitable ergonomics.

  • Engine, transmission (48
