Test drive Seat Arona: Hero of the new century

More than a year after its market debut, the Arona remains one of the most successful crossovers

The success of some cars is literally predicted. This is the case with the Seat Arona. Is it possible that at the moment a beautiful urban crossover, equipped with perhaps the most modern equipment in its segment and offered at very reasonable prices, is not selling well?

In practice, no. The Arona promises a combination of efficient drivetrains, higher-end road performance, a high level of active and passive safety, the richest array of driver assistance systems, and infotainment capabilities that go far beyond what is common in the small car class.

Add to this the slightly increased ground clearance and high seating position so prized in this type of car, combined with improved visibility in all directions, and the end result simply cannot but be successful.

A vision that catches your eye

The first thing that the Seat Arona conquers the hearts of the public with is undoubtedly its appearance. The car looks elegant and eye-catching without being artificially "bloated" or overly aggressive.

The design is in line with the current styling line of the Spanish Volkswagen Group, with crisp lines and clean lines with large wheels, additional body protection panels and roof rails.

The possibilities for additional customization are numerous, including the possibility to order different two-tone body versions. The interior also features striking color accents that bring freshness to the overall pragmatic interior design.

Space, especially in the front row of seats, is at a level that until recently was perceived as a good achievement for Leon rank models. The ergonomics and comfort of the seats are exemplary, as is the quality of the soundproofing – driving at highway speeds is quieter than most compact class models.

Energetic 1,6 liter petrol engine and economical diesel

The three-cylinder one-liter petrol engine with 115 horsepower and a maximum torque of 200 Nm, available in a wide range between 2000 and 3500 rpm, is one of the best alternatives for the Arona drive in terms of performance, fuel consumption and price.

For more comfortably oriented natures, the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is perfectly tuned to the engine's parameters, although the manual transmission does its job with remarkable precision and is a pleasure to work with as well.

For lovers of diesel engines and their economy, the 1.6 TDI version offers extremely low consumption combined with a pleasant temperament, confident traction and good manners.

Behavior on the road

In terms of behavior on the road, the higher ground clearance and, therefore, the change in the center of gravity relative to Ibiza is de facto not felt at all when driving. Based on a modular platform, the MQB A0 is pleasantly maneuverable in corners and remains enviably stable on highways. At the same time, the Arona relies on a harmonious transition over bumps and exhibits unexpectedly mature driving comfort, even on very bad roads.
