The most durable Soviet cars

The normal life of a car model is 5 to 10 years. There are of course notable exceptions such as the French Renault 4 which was produced from 1961 to 1994, the Indian Hindustan Ambassador which was produced from 1954 to 2014 and of course the original Volkswagen Beetle whose first car was produced in 1938. and the last one in 2003, 65 years later.

However, socialist brands also have a very strong presence on the list of the most durable models. The explanation is simple: in the Eastern Bloc, industry was never able to meet demand, and car-hungry citizens were willing to buy anything while it was moving. Consequently, the motivation of factories to change was not very high. The next selection includes 14 Soviet cars that were produced the longest, some of which are still in production.

Chevrolet niva

In production: 19 years, ongoing

Contrary to the opinion of many, this is not a budget product of General Motors. In fact, this car was developed in Togliatti in the 80s as the VAZ-2123 in order to inherit the allegedly outdated first Niva (which does not prevent it from being produced today). Production began in 2001, and after the financial collapse of VAZ, the American company bought the rights to the brand and the plant where the car was assembled.

By the way, since last month this car is again called Lada Niva, after the Americans withdrew and returned the rights to the name of AvtoVAZ. Production will continue until at least 2023, with over half a million units produced so far.

In total, about 600 units were produced.

But in 1981 he was already an absolute dinosaur.
