Test drive BMW 5 Series begins new quality control

This is a fully automated optical measuring complex at a pilot plant in Munich.

The German company BMW intends to introduce the 5-series sedan online before the end of this year. At the same time, we can enjoy a new generation of models in camouflage, located in an unfamiliar place. This is a fully automated optical measurement system at a pilot plant in Munich - the first of its kind (although Ford has such a structure for a similar purpose with a large number of digital cameras).

After the 5th series, this technology will be gradually applied to other models. The sensors in the modules determine key points in front of the placed vehicle and then fix the surface of the squares measuring 80 x 80 cm.

Since the process is automated, the robots can be left to work overnight. It takes several days for a complete image of the car, but this is significantly faster than the previous sampling method for checking geometry, which, using various complexes, captures the surfaces of individual body parts.

All data measured online is entered into the local network of the plant and can be transferred to other companies involved in the production cycle. Thus, you can quickly correct changes in equipment settings or eliminate detected defects.

The complex is equipped with two robots mounted on manipulators on which optical measuring modules are located. They move freely around the body and create a three-dimensional image of the surface, as well as a digital 3D model with an accuracy of 0,1 mm. This allows early identification and elimination of all possible deviations in the production process of the vehicle.
