Renault Megane Coupe-Convertible dCi 130 Dynamic

Diesel and convertible, which we wrote about more than once in Auto Magazine, are incompatible. When the roof is down, part of the fun of a convertible is also the sound of the engine - or at least the fact that the engine doesn't interfere with its sound. But when there is diesel under the hood, it is not. So: choose the petrol TCe130 instead, with the same performance and only slightly higher fuel consumption, you will have at least a decently motorized convertible. A coupe-cabriolet is truly a pleasure only if it is not a diesel-cabriolet.

By the way, about the complaints about the Megana CC test: the torsional strength of the body could have been better, since on a bad road the car shakes and spins so much that a warning was even triggered several times when the roof was not fully folded. Apparently the sensors are very sensitive.

The general negative fact that this is a diesel engine can be attributed to some positive features: the test consumption of 8 liters is quite good, considering that we drove most of the kilometers with the roof folded. Aerodynamics are much worse than with a raised roof (the difference can reach up to a liter), in addition, Megane Coupe-Cabriolet does not belong to the category of cars, as it weighs much more than one and a half tons. . Luckily, the engine is powerful enough and, above all, flexible enough to handle that weight without issue – even at highway speeds.

A completely incomprehensible wind net (and not only for Renault, but for any other brand) is included in the list of additional equipment, although it is an indispensable piece of equipment. After installing and raising all the windows, the Megan Coupe-Cabriolet with the roof folded down can also travel at high speeds (on the highway) and long distances. The audio system is more than powerful enough to cope with wind noise in these conditions (except, of course, tunnels), and it should be noted that this noise is pleasantly low.

You have to stop to fold or raise the roof, which is not surprising for this class of convertibles, but it would still be nice if Renault engineers chose to design the system so that it works even at low speeds. By the way: after one of the summer showers, we were surprised that (the car was parked in the parking lot during a rainstorm) the water that came from under the driver's shed soaked the driver's left knee well enough. Even more interesting: despite repeated rains, it happened only once. The all-electric gearshift is fast enough and takes the longest to open and close the huge boot lid.

Underneath is a trunk that even a non-convertible car can envy the Megan CC. If you remove the safety net separating the part of the trunk that is designed for folding the hardtop (consisting of two parts), you will load a really huge amount of cargo into it - enough for a family trip or a longer vacation. Even more interesting: even if the roof is folded down, the Megana Coupe-Cabriolet will fit two suitcases for planes and a laptop bag at the top. You can also travel with the top down with this convertible, which is a sign that many convertibles don't have a much higher price range and at least the same size.

The turbodiesel in the nose, of course, drives the front pair of wheels, and the transmission is mechanical. Unfortunately, an automatic (which would definitely fit such a machine) is undesirable (the continuously variable is for the two-litre petrol engine, which is not for sale here, and the dual-clutch option is only for the weaker diesel). It's a pity.

Of course, such a car is not expected to be an athlete when cornering, and the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet is definitely not. The body is not rigid enough, the car likes to bend over, the steering precision is not up to par. But that doesn't say anything, because the car makes up for it with calmness, good damping of irregularities and reliable perseverance in the forward direction. These, in turn, are the features that such a convertible needs much more than the sportiness of the chassis. If you want to race without a roof over your head, go for classic roadsters. The Megane Coupe-Cabriolet is officially a five-seater, but this information is only on paper.

In reality, the rear seats can only be used conditionally (the child will spend more than a kilometer there), of course, only if a windproof net is not installed there. But the fact remains (not only in the Megane Coupe-Cabriolet, but in all vehicles of this type): it is a two-seater with two occasional and emergency rear seats. Do yourself a favor and forget about them, because it's easier to get into another car (such convertibles are not the first family cars) than to remove the windshield and stuff it into the back seats. Convertible is designed for two.

And these two will just love this Megan. The front seats are good (but it should be noted that there are no ISOFIX child seat anchorages on the right seat, which we didn't even find on the optional equipment list - for some competitors it's even on the standard equipment list).

We know from the presentation that the Dynamique package in Megan CC is the only possible choice, and that the list of standard equipment included in it is also quite rich. For navigation (bad Tom Tom, replacing the once excellent navigation of the Renault Carminat) you have to pay, as well as for the skin. But cruise control and speed limiter, for example, are standard, bluetooth is also with a good audio system. So, if you manage to forget about the hum of a diesel, you can comfortably enjoy the journey with the roof down.

Special rating for convertibles

Roof Mechanism - Quality (13/15): Quite loud when folding and lifting

Roof Mechanism - Speed (8/10): Just moving the roof is not slow, it takes a long time to open and close the huge trunk lid.

Seal (7/15): Good soundproofing, but unfortunately the driver's knees got wet after a shower.

Appearance without a roof (4/5): Classic XNUMX-seater convertible with folded roof hides the long rear well

Exterior view with roof (3/5): The roof can be folded in two parts to form a long luggage compartment lid.

Image (5/10): There were a lot of them in the previous generation and, probably, there will be no less of them this time. No exclusives from Megan should be expected.

Overall Convertible Rating 40: A useful convertible, which sometimes disappoints only with the quality of the roof seal.

Automotive magazine rating: 3

Overall rating (330/420)

  • The competition in the XNUMX-seat convertible class of the upmarket brands is not too fierce, and the Megane is performing well enough that sales are likely to be close to peak again.

  • Exterior (12/15)

The rear (as is often the case with coupe-convertibles) is a bit inconsistently long.

  • Interior (104/140)

The glass roof gives off a spacious feel, there's plenty of room in the back and the boot is huge for a convertible.

  • Engine, transmission (45

    / 40)

A heavy car, a moderately powerful engine and a manual transmission are not a recipe for pleasant cruises.

  • Driving performance (55

    / 95)

Pleasingly comfortable in a really strong crosswind, the Megane CC also showed that it could go on steadily in the direction indicated by the driver.

  • Performance (26/35)

Average, pretty average. And an even more powerful engine is not available. Very sorry.

  • Security (48/45)

At Renault, we are used to safety concerns, which are very worrisome about the fact that there are no ISOFIX anchorages on the front right seat.

  • Economy

Low fuel consumption and a low base price are a big plus for this Megana Coupe-Cabriolet.
