Understanding body types: what is targa

This type of body is constantly flashed in films that describe the actions of people in the 70s and 80s in the United States of America. They stand out in a separate category of lightweight bodies, and photos and videos of past years show their uniqueness.

Targa is a body with a steel arch that runs behind the front seats. A few more differences: rigidly fixed glass, folding roof. In today's world, targa are all roadsters that have a metal bar and a removable center roof.

The variation is as follows. If a roadster is a two-seater car with a soft or hard removable roof, then a targa is a two-seater car with a rigidly fixed windshield and a removable roof (block or entire).

Historical information

The first model released was from the Porsche brand, and was called the Porsche 911 Targa. Hence the names of other similar machines went. Moreover, as you can see, targa has become a household word. Now, when pronouncing a word, motorists imagine not a single model (Porsche 911 Targa), but immediately a line of cars with this body.

However, there is clear evidence that this body type was not officially the first on the market. More precisely, the arc that was installed behind the front seats already existed. But it did not become the basis of the body.

The cars gained popularity in the 70s and 80s (which means they don't lie in the films). The number of convertibles fell on the market, and it was necessary to trade something and buy something, respectively. The reason for the appearance of the targa was this: the department of transport production wanted both convertibles and roadsters (targa) to exist in the lives of Americans. When driving with an open top, there was the possibility of a car overturning, anything could happen, and with a targa, such a chance dropped to zero.

The decision was taken. From that moment on, car developers in the 70s and 80s focused not on design, but on driving safety. After all, the reinforced windshield frame, retractable arches had a noticeable effect when driving, increased the reliability of cars and created safe driving conditions in any weather.

T-roof

A separate method of making a targa body. This is an even safer option when driving, especially in bad weather. When assembling the body, a longitudinal beam is installed - it holds the entire body and does not allow the driver to lose control, for example, in icy conditions. So the body becomes stiffer, turns, bends, torsion are more "delicate". The roof is not a single unit, but removable panels, which is convenient for transport.
