Signs of a failed battery

Faulty batteries most often manifest themselves when the temperature drops. In addition to old age, their functionality is limited by cold. As a result, at some point, the battery is no longer able to accumulate enough energy to start the car.

To avoid more serious problems, it is necessary to eliminate the first signs of a defect and, possibly, replace the battery.

Possible signs of a faulty battery

Signs of a failed battery

Signs that may indicate that the battery has reached its end of life include the following factors:

  • the engine does not start immediately (the problem may also be a malfunction of the fuel system or improper ignition);
  • while turning the ignition key, the dashboard illumination is dimmer than usual;
  • the starter cranks the flywheel more slowly than usual (and after a couple of revolutions it stops turning at all);
  • shortly after starting the radio, short breaks appear.

When should the battery be replaced?

Even if problems disappear while driving due to battery charging, you should check the first signs of the symptoms described above, and possibly replace the battery. Otherwise, in the middle of the road you will find an unpleasant surprise - the car will not be able to start. And waiting for help in the middle of a winter road is still a pleasure.

Signs of a failed battery

The battery is checked with a voltmeter and can be run in the workshop or even at home. If the density of the electrolyte drops noticeably after a recent charge, it means that the plates have exhausted their life (if energy-intensive equipment is not used). How to charge the battery properly was told earlier.

How to extend battery life.

Here are a few reminders that will help maintain the battery’s performance over the entire life cycle set by the manufacturer:

  • If the terminals are oxidized (a white layer has formed on them), the risk of contact loss at the terminals is greatly increased. In this case, you should clean them with a damp cloth and then grease them with special grease.
  • The electrolyte level in the battery should be checked regularly. This is done through the holes in the cover (in the case of serviced batteries). Inside there is a mark below which the level of acidic liquid should not fall. If the level is lower, you can add distilled water.AKB
  • At low temperatures, when starting the motor, all equipment that does not contribute to its operation must be turned off. This applies to headlights, stove, multimedia, etc.
  • Make sure the generator is clean and dry. Moisture in winter can overload it and shorten battery life.

Last but not least, don't forget to turn off the headlights and the radio when leaving the car.
