The principle of operation of "Stop-smoke"
All additives in the Stop Smoke category work on the same principle: increasing the viscosity of the oil at engine operating temperature. In some formulations, additional polymer components are used to increase the strength of the oil film in the contact patches. And this helps the oil in the friction pairs of the ring-cylinder and cap-piston rod to remain on the working surfaces and not seep directly into the combustion chamber.
Anti-smoke additives work in a similar way to oil stabilizers. They are only aimed specifically at suppressing smoke formation. While stabilizers have a complex effect, and smoke reduction is only one of the positive effects.
Malfunctions in which stop smoke will not help
As is clear from the principle of operation, the effect of reducing smoke emission is based only on an increase in the viscosity of the oil, which leads to less penetration into the combustion chamber and, accordingly, less intense burnout.
If the piston group has uniform wear of the rings and cylinders, abrasion of the working lips of the oil seals or weakening of their springs, an increase in the viscosity of the oil will logically lead to less penetration into the combustion chamber. However, there are a number of defects in which increased viscosity, if it has a positive effect on the intensity of smoke formation, is insignificant. We list only the main of these defects:
- occurrence of piston rings;
- tearing of the oil seal of the oil seal or its fall from its seat;
- broken valve bushings until significant axial movement occurs;
- defects in the form of cracks, one-sided wear and chips on any elements of the crankshaft or timing gear, through which oil can penetrate into the combustion chamber or be partially removed from the cylinder walls.
In these cases, the effect of the Anti-smoke additive will be either minimal or not noticeable at all.

Motorists speak generally negatively about the Anti-smoke additive. Exaggerated expectations are affecting, which are based on advertising promises of manufacturers about a miraculous effect. However, there are a number of positive aspects that are noted by car owners in some cases.
- The tool can help sell a car with a worn engine. On the one hand, such tricks cannot be called honest. On the other hand, such a deception in the automotive world has long been in the status of a "paranormal" phenomenon. Therefore, for a short-term reduction in smoke in order to sell a car, such a tool will fit.
- With copious emission of smoke, when a liter of oil burns out in 1-2 thousand kilometers, the remedy can theoretically help. And it's not just about saving on oil. In addition to the need for constant topping up, the unpleasant feeling of riding a “smoke generator” when other road users turn around and start pointing fingers is also reduced. Again, "Smoke Stop" will only help if there are no defects in which the point of using it is lost.
- Subjectively, many car owners note a reduction in engine noise and smoother operation. Also, no matter how paradoxical it may sound, sometimes after using Stop-Smoke compounds, a decrease in fuel consumption and an increase in engine power are noticed. At the stage when the motor is critically worn out, consumes liters of oil and smokes, an increase in viscosity will just give the effect of reducing consumption. In theory, high viscosity, on the contrary, has a negative effect on energy saving. However, in the case of an exhausted engine, increased viscosity will partially restore engine compression, which will give an increase in power and allow the fuel to work out with greater efficiency.
Summing up, we can say this: Stop Smoke additives can really help reduce engine smoke. However, it is not worth waiting for the effect of a panacea or hoping for a long-term result.
