Test drive the right choice for sport or off-road: we drove a Škoda Octavia RS and Scout

Slovenian buyers are even more convinced than the average European about the good performance of the Octavia RS, as 15 percent of all new Octavias in Slovenia with the addition of RS (most Combi and equipped with a turbodiesel engine) are only 13 percent in Europe. This ratio is also better for scout buyers in Slovenia, so far it has been around 10 percent, compared to only six in Europe.

Both more noble versions have been redesigned in a similar way to the regular Octavia. This means a new take on the mask and headlights, now also available in RS with LED technology. The RS and Scout goggles differ in performance, with one more sporty and the other more off-road. Different heights of the car are also suitable for this, the RS is understated (by 1,5 centimeters), the bottom of the Scout is above the ground (by three centimeters). Mention should be made of the changes in the interior, as now Škoda's technicians have tried to add richer and more attractive equipment. In the RS, these are sports seats with excellent traction, covered in Alcantara faux leather. There is also a new infotainment system with accessories such as a larger touchscreen, Wi-Fi hotspot, SmartLink+, ten-speaker audio equipment (Canton), inductive mobile phone charger (Phonebox). For freezers there is a steering wheel heater. Another novelty is a smart key with which we can load car settings for different users into memory.

Motor technology is more or less known. The RS petrol engine now has 230 "horsepower", which is 10 more than in the previous basic version. Škoda promises that an even more powerful petrol version with just 110 horsepower will be available for the RS and Scout by the end of the year. All other engine equipment has not changed from the previous one. The equipment of gearboxes, manual and double clutches depends on the engine. But now the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission will be updated, just like the one the Kodiaq first received. The new one is significantly lighter and has several other improvements. Both RS and Scout now have XDS + electronic differential locks in all versions.

The sports chassis of the Octavia RS is lowered and offers more powerful brakes. In addition to the 17" standard wheels, you can also opt for XNUMX" or even two large rims. Compared to the regular Octavia, the rear track has been increased by three centimeters (RS). Another novelty is the progressive electric power steering mechanism, which, when cornering quickly and boldly (especially on a closed track), blends well with the rest of the RS design. Along with adaptive chassis damping (DCC), the RS also offers two-stage ESP operation (driving profile selection).

At Scout, we must mention that the excellent rear power differential (hydraulic plate clutch - Haldex), already in its fifth generation of this essential component for excellent driving performance, ensures excellent power transfer to any of the four drive wheels. The distribution of power to the wheels occurs in accordance with the conditions on the ground.

The list of standard equipment is quite long, but the prices are also reasonable, they differ most depending on the motor equipment, since most of the protective and other technological accessories are always sufficient. If desired, of course, the Octavia also offers many things, such as assistance when reversing with a trailer. Both special Octavias can already be ordered from us.
