  • fuel is supplied in a larger or smaller volume. With a greater volume of gasoline, the spark is not able to ignite the mixture fully, so when you press the accelerator pedal, the car starts to twitch, and the fuel continues to burn in the exhaust line. With a lack of fuel, the engine also behaves, however, this can lead to burnout of the piston due to insufficient cooling from the injection of gasoline.
  • lack of oxygen. The power unit behaves the same as with a lack of fuel. Lack of air can cause a dirty air filter or a failed oxygen sensor.
  • the ignition system is not working properly. The reasons lie in the adjustment of the ignition angle, where the spark can be supplied too sooner or later, so the mixture burns again defectively. The coil and spark plug for malfunction also contribute to the triple. On carburetor engines with a distributor distributor, the ignition angle, which requires periodic adjustment, is often lost.
  • low compression. For this reason, complete combustion of the working mixture is impossible due to a violation of the tightness of the cylinder. In this case, the triple is accompanied in the entire range of engine revolutions, sometimes it may not occur when the engine reaches operating temperature.

Thus, the reason for tripling the engine lies in the malfunction of the ignition system, fuel and intake systems. Most rarely, this occurs through a decrease in compression (on long runs), which occurs due to an increase in the gap between the cylinder and the piston or due to burnout of the valve of the gas distribution mechanism. 

The spark plugs are to blame

The first thing you should pay attention to is the condition of the spark plugs. The cause of tripling may be hidden in the wrong gap between the electrodes, or in the breakdown of the candle. If adjusting the gap and cleaning the carbon deposits did not help, you should replace the candles with new ones with the appropriate characteristics. It is recommended to change candles every 20-30 thousand km.

High-voltage wires of the ignition system are used on carburetor and injection units (with a single ignition coil). BB wires are recommended to be replaced every 50000 km, as they are vulnerable to external aggressive environment. Faulty wires provoking triple motor:

  • wear of rubber tips,
  • the difference in resistance between the wires is above 4 kOhm.

Checking the wires is carried out with a multimeter: set the resistance value in kOhm, clamp the wire on both sides with probes. Normal resistance is 5 kOhm.

Often the culprit for the unstable operation of the engine is in the intake system. The injector is more vulnerable to the problem, since the oxygen supply is scanned and regulated by sensors. List of possible malfunctions:

  • malfunction of the air flow sensor (mass air flow sensor) or the absolute pressure sensor and the intake temperature sensor (DBP + DTV),

To diagnose the injector fuel system, it is enough to “read” the ECU with a scanner for errors. If none are found, it is necessary to wash the nozzles with a special liquid, calibrate the throughput, replace the sealing cuffs, and change the fuel filter in parallel. 

When troit injection engine

If, in the case of a carburetor engine, the cause of tripping is determined more or less easily, then in an injection engine it may not be so noticeable. The reason for this is the electronics, which controls all processes in the car.

The systems with which such cars are equipped are difficult to diagnose. For this reason, an inexperienced person is better off not even trying to fix something. It is better to pay for computer diagnostics than to spend money on expensive repairs due to improper maintenance of the injector.

When the first symptoms of trebling are manifested, it is necessary to carry out electronic engine diagnostics. In most cases, the problem lies in the malfunction of the ignition system or one of the above sensors.

If everything is in order, you should check the condition of the fuel and air filters, as well as the possible presence of suction (unaccounted for air). If everything is in order with the fuel and intake systems, all sensors are in good order - check the compression, and if it is below 11 kg / cm3, then the gap between the cylinder and the piston has increased or the timing valve has burned out.
