Peugeot RCZ 1.6 THP 200

Judging only by upturned heads and facial expressions, RCZ has recently been a record and judged by one really cool Peugeot. Now supporters of this brand have come to the fair at their own expense.

Let's start with a little imagination, but it won't really take long: RCZ is a cat in trouble. A lion? Okay, let there be a lion. Or even better: a lioness. The parable becomes even more obvious if the power plant is a 200 horsepower turbocharged gasoline engine. But without overtaking, beautiful in a row.

It is true that the millennium has changed in the meantime, but not so long ago we do not remember the Peugeot 406 Coupé. To me? You know, Pininfarina and all that. Then we hinted in the pages of this magazine that this car could become a classic - not only in appearance, but also in another way. Fine. The RCZ is also a coupe, its looks and interior capacity are even more pronounced than the Four Hundred Six, but it's still hard to tell if it's a technical or "spiritual" successor: first of all, it's much more showy. It was with him that the Peugeot design philosophy came to life, and probably also at its best. Because, you know, everything also needs at least a little luck, despite all the knowledge and experience.

The adjective performance also has a range of connotations, from good to bad. RCZ? The stability of strokes, lines and surfaces, as well as the consistency of the dimensions of all elements of the exterior, give the appearance of this coupe a clear positive sign. A driver (or a female driver) with a neat head and a sober view of the world is waiting for you. Not a gizdalene.

Heh. . This sobriety may not be suitable for everything. However, it all depends on the financial headroom in the personal (or business?) budget: the RCZ is a full fledged 2+2, i.e. something like a 370Z or at home: there is room in the back - next to nothing. There are seats, but people taller than 150 centimeters really stick their heads into the glass (yes, there is already a glass ...), and there will also be a problem with children, because a larger chair does not fit. inside. That is: more or less selfishness for two or a purchase that has nothing to do with sobriety.

But such intoxication (drunkenness - in this case, a completely inappropriate term) can also be completely excusable if it is provoked by (positive) emotions, which is not particularly difficult with RCZ. Because I say: a man buys an RCZ also just for the sake of appearance and is ready to forgive him many things, for example, awkwardness on the back bench.

This time in Peugeot (and / or in Graz in Magna) everything worked out almost perfectly. You open the dooool door (and I sincerely hope not very often in any cramped parking lot) and you see the typical Peugeot interior, which this time seems like a pretty decent continuation of the exterior. Well, it might be a little less bright on the inside, in fact, it is a lot less flashy, but it seems to be just as correct. In a sense, the interior looks sleek and prestigious, clearly, here is the cowshed leather: light gray on the seats (uh, prestigious, but also graceful), black around them. Also on the dashboard.

There is also a large clock between the central vents, which immediately catches the eye and promises that the time for a crisp analog clock may even return altogether. A close inspection reveals that the interior has been designed with attention to detail: there is full lighting (down to foot lighting and outside lighting), there is a constant display of date, altitude and outside temperature (on the center screen), there are many drawers and places for small items. and there is an audio system in which everything is hidden behind the abbreviations mp3, SD, USB, DVD and HDD. More or less only for the driver: excellent (logical and transparent) display of data on the on-board computer. It may be unfortunate that the RCZ does not have a head-up screen on the windshield and the fact that the steering wheel covers most of the sensors in the down position is not particularly convenient, but luckily information about the current speed can be obtained.

The interior, with the exception of the seats, is predominantly black with tasteful additions of chrome accents. The trunk is also completely black, but it is also relatively large and, above all, almost completely square in shape. Because the RCZ is a coupe (not a combo coupe), there is only a lid (not a third door) at the rear, and there is a lever on the trunk ceiling that releases the entire rear seat back, which is then placed in a horizontal position. The hole at the expansion point is slightly smaller than the size of the barrel, but not quite.

Sitting in the front seats is comfortable, and a bit sporty (with side grip), and there's plenty of room in all directions for the average driver and passenger. The steering wheel also wants to be sporty - not only because of the small diameter and thickness of the ring, but also because of the flat bottom. But this is just a trick; the ring must not be lowered so that it presses on the legs, which means that the flat part of the ring is not needed, and therefore it is impractical to twist it.

Rear window corrugation is far less of a concern, as it distorts the view on dry roads, and more worrying on wet roads is that there is no wiper, which probably wouldn't be particularly effective for a corrugated window anyway. But the result is no significant deterioration in security. There are also surprisingly few dead corners, perhaps only the one on the back left a little more pronounced.

The RCZ is marketed with three engines, but probably the one that powered the test drive, the real RCZ. Already at start, he warns in his voice that this is not a coffee grinder, but when starting at (too) low rpm and after switching from first to second gear, he gets a little nervous: it may "creak" a little. He likes at least 2.000 rpm. Hence the school example has a beautiful character: there are no jerks with increasing power, which continuously (and almost linearly) increases over 6.000 rpm.

When it comes to engines with high torque in terms of power (turbo), the driver gets the feeling that he pulls great at low to medium revs and only on average at high and high revs. Well, it's just a feeling, the speedometer says something else entirely. That said, this RCZ car seems to be quite moderate in consumption. The meter readings show that it consumes 100, 130, 160, 5 and 2, 7 in fifth gear at 9, 10 and 5 kilometers per hour and 4, 8, 7, 0 and 9, 2 liters of gasoline per 100 in sixth gear. kilometers. At a speed of 200 kilometers per hour in sixth gear (5.400 rpm), it is expected to consume 16 liters per 5 kilometers.

The fact that this is probably the most "real" engine for the RCZ at the moment is evidenced by the harmony of mechanics. The gearbox shifts very well and is short and sporty: in sixth gear it passes through the beginning of the red square below the 6.000 on the scale. This combination is always friendly in unhurried driving, and even more so in sports, if not semi-run. The front-wheel drive is well-tamed and the car is always a little playful due to the wheel alignment and center of gravity. Even when the ESP system is on, which does not interfere with the mechanics for a long time and therefore allows a slight pleasant slip. But when he jumps in, he is kind to his mission. ESP can be completely deactivated for the mischievous character of the fast rear end with copious speed reduction in corners.

A loving driver enjoys it. Left foot support is very good, the steering wheel is pleasantly communicative and precise, the brakes are reliable for a long time, and the engine sound is clearly sporty. Only the seats slowly lose their lateral support in very fast corners.

Therefore, I say: no joke with a lioness. Not with RCZ. Competitors are having a bad day.

Overall rating (325/420)

  • While sales will likely not be comparable to, say, the 308, this RCZ will certainly boost the brand's reputation tremendously and attract many people who have been opponents of lion cars or even all of the Romanesque car products.

  • Exterior (15/15)

This is a Peugeot that will receive approval (for its looks) even from people who are otherwise not “lions”.

  • Interior (83/140)

Great interior design, workmanship and materials, and an amazingly useful trunk, but really only auxiliary rear seats.

  • Engine, transmission (58

    / 40)

The engine and steering wheel are great, and the drivetrain, drivetrain and chassis are right behind them. Overall, distinctly sporty.

  • Driving performance (58

    / 95)

Great, but still interesting, road location, and a great sense of leadership and control.

  • Performance (33/35)

If the blower hadn't been delayed a bit, I would probably have taken all the points proceeds.

  • Security (42/45)

There are no modern active safety devices, the safety in the back seat is questionable, otherwise excellent ESP, very good headlights ...

  • Economy

For its 200 "horses", obtained with a turbocharger, he also knows how to drive moderately, and with a wet ride, 18 liters per 100 km are easily achievable.
