Opel Signum 3.0 CDTI Automatic Cosmo

Why was Signum created at all? Ostensibly in order to attract those buyers who wanted to cut half a step above the Vectra. Not in size, but in prestige. But let's be realistic: is it worth it?

Yes and no. If you forget that the Signum is actually a five-door version of the Vectra sedan, it will pay off. After all, it is not more expensive than the Vectra, it is equipped in the same way, but for your money you still get the Signum, not the Vectra. Yeah, your neighbor might actually have a Vectro, but you might have a Signum.

On the other hand, you have to come to terms with the fact that Signum is less useful than Vectra. Its wheelbase is longer than the four- or five-door version (and the same as the van), so there may be more legroom for the rear passengers. It depends on how the rear seats are positioned. Yes, you read that right: the rear seats. Two.

The Signum is (as in the test) a four-seater, as there is a tall console between the seats that doubles as an armrest, there are tons of storage boxes, and there you can also find audio controls for the rear passengers. Yes, such a Signum will take very good care of those who ride in the back. The seats are fully retracted, there is little music, and the covers themselves are heavy.

One thing to keep in mind is that four comfortably traveling passengers in a car means less luggage space. Just because the Signum has the same wheelbase as the Vectra van, that doesn't mean the trunk is that spacious. What's more: when the rear seats are fully pushed back, there is only 365 liters of space in the boot, which is less, for example, for family trips.

And thanks to the sloping rear window, even when loading up to the ceiling, you won't get much better. After all, this is also normal - the overall length of the Signum is much closer to the four- or five-door Vectra than to the van version. Clearly, the Signum has been designed with passengers and their comfort in mind.

So its chassis is strong enough to keep the Signum from tilting like a ship in corners, yet comfortable enough for passengers to find only the most jagged ends of roads. This is especially true on the track, when it does not irritate the dive with longer asphalt folds and maintains direction well.

The drivetrain is also best suited for highways. The three-liter six-cylinder turbodiesel is capable of developing an available 184 "horsepower" (although even more than 200 can be easily extracted from the same volume), and 400 Nm of torque in combination with a six-speed automatic transmission is enough to make driving comfortable and high travel speeds.

Diesel consumption does not disappoint either: in the test, it turned out to be around 10 liters, and at longer and faster speeds it can slip two liters lower. And since the engine sound is also not annoying (however, it is still so solid that its sound is sometimes too strong), the Signum is a great traveler. And since this is a Signum, not a Vectra, it is more (prestigious) attractive in this respect.

evaluation

  • Technically it's a Signum Vectra, but in practice it's more prestigious, less useful, not more expensive, and much more comfortable for live content. If the trunk doesn't bother you, the Vectri is a great alternative.
