Are car air fresheners dangerous to health?
For many drivers, they are part of the car interior, others find them simply inconvenient - Wunderbaum trees hang in the car and distract from driving.
The reason for using such accessories is to provide a pleasant atmosphere in the car interior with the help of an original smell. But according to various studies, hanging air fresheners are not as harmless as they claim.
use Features
Fresheners usually consist of cardboard, impregnated with various artificially created aromas and other “excipients”. To regulate the flow of aromas, air fresheners are often placed in a plastic box. At the beginning of use, only a small portion of the cardboard should be removed to prevent excessive leakage of chemicals.
However, the information on the packaging is often ignored, and the plastic film is completely removed from the very beginning. Thus, a large number of flavors gets into the car interior in a short time. Often, instead of a pleasant aroma, the car has a pungent odor, which can lead to headaches, and in worst cases, even high blood pressure, irritation of the mucous membrane, or asthma attacks.
Freshener Composition
In addition to the improper use of air fresheners, the ingredients themselves in many cases cause health problems. Independent tests regularly confirm that most of the tested flavors are many times higher than the limit values for volatile organic compounds released into the air. In some tests, the excess is up to 20 times. The inspectorate also found allergenic ingredients, as well as plasticizers that can damage detoxification organs such as the liver or kidneys.
Fragrances can be dangerous when combined with cigarette smoke. Along with aromatic wood gases, you can create mixtures that are many times more carcinogenic than cigarette smoke. Small particles of dust bind to the components of cigarette smoke and can settle for a long time in the human body (source: German Professional Association of Otolaryngologists).
But if you still do not want to get rid of car air fresheners, we recommend that you at least pay attention to the advice of reputable testing institutes (for example, Ökotest in Germany).
Natural ingredients
Care should also be taken when preparing aromas in order to use as few artificially created ingredients as possible and to include the maximum possible amount of natural oil essences.
Flavored sachets in which there are no artificial additives, for example, full of herbs, lavender flowers, coffee beans or orange peel, are a good alternative, provided that you are not allergic to the ingredients used.
Regardless of whether the odors are artificial or natural, the interior of the car should always be well ventilated and existing odors should not be mixed with other aromas.
