2021 VW T-Cross Review - Everything You Want to Know About Volkswagen's Small SUV

The T-Cross competes in the vibrant "light SUV" segment of the Australian new car market, which is currently dominated by the Mazda CX-3.

It also competes with popular rivals such as the Ford Puma, Hyundai Venue, Kia Stonic, Skoda Kamiq, Toyota Yaris Cross and Nissan Juke.

The CX-3 offers a variety of models, ranging from the low $20 bar to over 2.0s, comes with a XNUMX-liter petrol engine (only) and is offered in front- and all-wheel drive, which is a rarity in this class.

Like the T-Cross, it plays an important role in both active and passive safety, and Mazda's distinctive design language sets it apart from the relatively understated VW exterior. If your budget starts low or is ready to go up from the T-Cross's narrow price range (XNUMX to XNUMX), this might be an option worth considering.

There are four 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines, all of which are front-wheel drive only. Namely, the Ford Puma (about $23-35 thousand), Kia Stonic (about $21-30 thousand, and also available in a non-turbo 1.4 version), Nissan Juke (about $28-36 thousand) and Skoda Kamiq. (about 28-35 thousand dollars, and also offered as a 1.5-liter turbo-petrol engine).

The Kamiq, the twin of the VW Group T-Cross, got the nod in our recent three-way comparison test between it, the Ford Puma and the Toyota Yaris Cross, thanks mainly to its stylish interior, driving dynamics, practicality and value for money. . So it's a worthy alternative.

Unsurprisingly, the standard trim on the T-Cross is strong. (Image: James Cleary)

The Hyundai Venue outperformed the CX-3 in another recent three-car test, so it has a lot going for it. In another recent comparison, the Kia Stonic is ahead of the CX-3. And Nissan recently expanded and upgraded its Juke lineup. Told you this is a hot market segment.

But overall, the T-Cross fits in well in terms of standard features, safety technology, fuel efficiency, practicality, and cost of ownership. However, this is a less sure challenge to drivetrain performance and refinement.
