Overview of used movers: 2010
Here is our guide to the five best selling people transport vehicles on the market (for 2010, VFACTS).
1st place - KIA GRAND CARNIVAL
Price: from $41,490 per ride (Platinum $54,990 per ride)
ENGINES: 3.5L/V6 202kW/336Nm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Economy: 10.9 l / 100 km
back space: 912 liters (rear seats up), 2380 liters (rear seats down)
Rating: 79 / 100
The new engine has breathed new life into Australia's best-selling eight-seater. Families used to buy the base Kia Carnival because it was the cheapest on the market, but now Grand Carnival prices are over $50,000. Kia now says that the bulk of sales (carnival and grand carnival sales are counted together) come from these more expensive versions. That's a lot of money for Kia, but bundled with some quirky features, it delivers power thanks to the new 3.5-litre V6. There seems to be too much power when the car is light and only the driver is in it.
Load it up, though, and there's plenty of room for passengers and luggage. We recently took a car to the south coast of New South Wales for a weekend this month and it was a comfortable road cruiser with a bit of city driving with six people on board. However, there are some unusual features that take some getting used to. The driver's seat movement controls are located on the door. It took some time to find them, but the more you got used to the car, the more it became a comfortable place. This is especially useful when you open the car after someone else has been driving and you need to adjust the seat. This allows you to move the seat before you sit in it.
The foot brake is released by a separate lever next to the steering wheel, which also proved difficult to find. The big car also has a rearview camera. But not on the screen, where it is in almost every second car. Instead, it was a tiny screen on the rearview mirror that was hard to see due to outside light hitting it, and the image was too small to be usable. There are plenty of cup holders, and the pull-out table between the two front seats is great for storing cell phones and the like. A power tailgate is important for ease of access when loading, and the second and third row seats cleverly fold down to make access easier.
2nd place - HYUNDAI IMAX
Price: from $36,990
ENGINES: 2.4 l / 4 cylinders 129 kW / 228 Nm
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Economy: 10.6 l / 100 km
back space: 851L (rear seats do not fold fully)
Rating: 75 / 100
The biggest boost for people here has been the amazing sales success in Australia. It's more like a van than a car in terms of looks, handling, and rugged feel. However, Hyundai's competitive pricing has attracted buyers. Engine noise in the cabin is loud. The interior is quite bland and plastic, but there are plenty of cup holders. But the big one in this market is fine and there is enough space for the passengers and all their luggage. There are both petrol and diesel, but only the petrol automatic version is more popular, although the diesel is more economical.
3rd place – TOYOTA TARAGO
Price: from $50,990
ENGINES: 2.4 l / 4 cylinders 125 kW / 224 Nm; 3.4 l / V6 202 kW / 340 Nm
Transmission: 4-speed automatic; 6 speed automatic
Economy: 9.5 l / 100 km; 10.3 l / 100 km
back space: 4-cyl. 466 l (up), 1161 l / 100 km (down); 6-cylinder 549 l (up), 1780 l (down)
Rating: 81 / 100
Toyota's reliability, combined with the price and wide range, has made the Tarago a favorite of large families, fleets, hotels and car rental companies for many years. A V6 is much better than a four-cylinder but costs more. The most expensive model costs over $70,000. Aside from the extra power that overcomes the sluggishness of the quad when it's loaded, side visibility is better and there's more storage space inside.
4th place — HONDA ODYSSEY
Price: from $41,990 (luxury $47,990)
ENGINES: 2.4 l / 4 cylinders 132 kW / 218 Nm
Transmission: 5-speed automatic
Economy: 7.1 l / 100 km
back space: 259 liters (rear seats up), 708 liters (rear seats down)
Rating: 80 / 100
Sex appeal sold the Honda Odyssey for years. It looks and feels more like a car than its competitors, sits lower on the road and looks good for this class of car. There's plenty of room inside, with plenty of cup holders and a handy pull-out table between the front seats. Earlier models suffered from the absence of a lap and lap seat belt in the center of the second row, but that is thankfully a thing of the past. It's not the most powerful machine, and it has less rear storage than many others, but it scores heavily on looks.
5th place - JOURNEY OF DOD
Price: from $36,990 ($41,990)
ENGINES: 2.7L/V6 136kW/256Nm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Economy: 10.3 l / 100 km
back space: 167 liters (rear seats up), 1461 liters (2nd and 3rd row seats down)
Rating: 78 / 100
Although it is one of the few diesel-powered vehicles, buyers have preferred the mid-range petrol R/T model. The Journey has a few more features and features than some of its competitors and offers a more beefy and beefy style. It's more of a cross between an all-wheel drive car and a vehicle than its competitors. In year 4 it received a security and feature update.
OTHER TO CONSIDER
The next two best-selling people carriers in Australia at the moment are the smaller Toyota Avensis and Kia Rondo. They have less powerful engines than the top five, and much less rear seat legroom and rear luggage space. While adults can happily sit in the back row of the five, there are really only kids in these two. Avensis is also a fairly old model, produced since 2003. However, both cars match the price well and are suitable for small families looking for something a little more practical than a station wagon.
6th place - TOYOTA AVENSIS
Price: from $39,990
ENGINES: 2.4 l / 4 cylinders 118 kW / 221 Nm
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Economy: 9.2 l / 100 km
back space: 301L (rear seats up)
Rating: 75 / 100
7th place – KIA RONDO
Price: from $24,990
ENGINES: 2 l / 4 cylinders 106 kW / 189 Nm
Transmission: 5-speed manual, 4-speed automatic
Economy: 8.6 l / 100 km
back space: 184L (rear seats up)
Rating: 75 / 100
