New Honda Jazz with central airbag

This technology is part of a full range of systems that reduce the likelihood of injury.

The all-new Jazz is Honda's first vehicle and the first model on the market to be available as standard with center front airbag technology. This is only a small part of the rich package of safety systems and assistants included in the package of the model, which strengthens its reputation as one of the safest in Europe.

New central airbag system

A new center airbag is installed at the rear of the driver's seat and opens into the space between driver and passenger. This is one of the ten airbags in the new jazz. Reduces the chance of a collision between the front seat occupant and the driver in the event of a side impact. Its position has been carefully thought out to ensure maximum safety when opening. Again, for the same purpose, it is attached with three joints that provide a precise curve for its movement when unfolded. The center airbag complements the lateral support provided by the seat belts and the center front armrest, which increases in height. According to Honda's preliminary tests, this approach reduces the chance of head injury to the occupant on the side of the impact by 85% and on the other side by 98%.

Another improvement in the new Jazz is the i-side rear seat system. This unique two-component airbag protects second-row passengers from hitting doors and C-pillars in the event of a side collision. It is small in size to be retained in the new generation of Jazz, our renowned “magic seat” function, which has proven extremely successful in previous generations of the model.

All these innovations are dictated by additional requirements that the independent European Road Safety Commission Euro NCAP introduced for 2020 due to serious injuries caused by a side impact. New tests conducted by the organization will expand the focus of research in this area.

“Passenger safety is a top priority for our designers when developing any new vehicle,” said Takeki Tanaka, Honda project manager. “We have completely overhauled the new generation of Jazz, and this has allowed us to introduce even more advanced technologies and upgrade safety systems, as well as make them part of the standard equipment for exceptional safety in case of accidents of any kind. We are confident that after all this, the new Jazz will remain one of the safest vehicles in its class,” he added.

In addition to the innovative central airbag system, the SRS front airbag system protects the driver’s knees and lower limbs and further protects the passenger’s head and chest, as it minimizes the entire body to bounce forward on impact.

Passive safety in vehicle design

The body structure of the new Jazz is based on Honda's new technology called ACE ™ from Advanced Compatibility Engineering ™. This provides superior passive safety and even better protection for passengers.

A network of connected structural elements distributes energy in a collision even more evenly in the front of the car, thereby reducing the impact of impact force in the cab. ACE ™ protects not only Jazz and its occupants, but also other cars in an accident.

Even better active safety technology in standard equipment

Passive safety in the new Jazz is complemented by an expanded set of active safety systems for the new Jazz, combined under the name Honda SENSING. The new high-resolution camera with an even wider range replaces the multifunctional city brake system (CTBA) camera in the previous generation of Jazz. He even more successfully recognizes the characteristics of the road surface and the situation as a whole, including the “feeling” whether the car is approaching the outer edge of the sidewalk (grass, gravel, etc.) and others. The camera also removes blur and always provides a clear field of view.

The advanced Honda SENSING technology suite includes:

  • Anti-collision braking system - works even better at night, distinguishes pedestrians even in the absence of street lighting. The system also warns the driver if he finds a cyclist. It also applies braking force when the Jazz starts to cross the path of another car. All this is possible thanks to the newly developed wide-angle camera.
  • Adaptive Autopilot - automatically tracks the distance to the car in front of the Jazz and allows our car to follow the speed of general traffic, slowing down if necessary (following at low speed).
  • Lane Keeping Assistant - works at speeds above 72 km/h on urban and rural roads, as well as on multi-lane highways.
  • Lane Departure Warning System - Alerts the driver if it detects that the vehicle is approaching the outer edge of the sidewalk (grass, gravel, etc.) or that the vehicle is changing lanes without a turn signal. ,
  • Traffic Sign Recognition System - Uses signals from the front wide-angle camera to read traffic signs while the vehicle is moving, automatically recognizing them and displaying them as icons on the 7" LCD as soon as the vehicle passes them. Detects road signs indicating speed limits , as well as forbidding passage. Shows two symbols at the same time - to the right of the display are speed limits, and to the left are prohibitions to pass, as well as speed limits in accordance with additional instructions due to road conditions and climate change.
  • Intelligent speed limiter - recognizes the speed limits on the road and adjusts them to them. If a traffic sign indicates a speed lower than the speed at which the vehicle is currently moving, an indicator lights up on the display and an audible signal sounds. The system then automatically decelerates the vehicle.
  • Auto High Beam Switching System – Works at speeds above 40 km/h and automatically turns on and off the high beam depending on whether there is oncoming traffic or a car (as well as trucks, motorcycles, bicycles and ambient lights) in front of you.
  • Blind spot information - supplemented by a lateral movement monitoring system and is standard for the level of executive equipment.
