Test drive new Volvo Trucks feature: tandem axle lift

This provides better traction and a 4% reduction in fuel consumption when the truck is moving without a load.

This feature allows the truck's second drive axle to be disengaged and raised, which provides better traction and a 4% reduction in fuel consumption when the truck is unloaded.

Volvo Trucks is introducing a tandem axle lifting function designed for heavy transport where one is transported in one direction and the tracks are empty in the other - for example when transporting timber, construction and/or bulk materials.

“By lifting the tandem axle, you can disengage the second drive axle and raise its wheels off the road when the truck is moving empty. This provides many benefits, the most important of which is fuel economy. Driving with the drive axle up saves up to 4% fuel compared to driving with all axles down, says Jonas Odermalm, Construction Segment Manager at Volvo Trucks.

By replacing the differential of the first drive axle with a toothed clutch, the second drive axle can be disengaged and raised. Thus, the driver has access to the power and power of the two driving axles (6X4) and can also use the better maneuverability of one driving axle (4X2). In addition, driving with the second drive axle raised reduces the turning radius by one meter and results in less wear on tires and suspension systems.

“Twin axle lift is ideal for transport when surface conditions or gross weight require tandem drive, but the truck is moving in the opposite direction with no load or very light load. On slippery or soft surfaces, the driver can increase the pressure on the first axle by raising the second one, which leads to better traction and reduces the risk of getting stuck,” explains Jonas Odermalm.

Raising the tandem axle also provides greater driver comfort when the truck is empty, which in many cases corresponds to 50% of the working time. Cab noise is lower and steering wheel vibration is reduced when the tires of only one drive axle are in contact with the road.

Tandem axle lift is available for Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FH and Volvo FH16.

Tandem Bridge Construction Facts

– By lifting the tandem axle, the second drive axle can be disengaged and raised while driving.

– The tires can be raised up to 140 mm above the road surface.

– When the tandem bridge lift is engaged, the truck consumes up to 4% less fuel. Tire wear is less and the turning radius is one meter smaller.
