Nissan has developed an autonomous tractor for road transport

For autonomous transportation of cars, the plant uses a modified Leaf electric car.

Japanese company Nissan developed an autonomous intelligent transport system (IVT - Intelligent Vehicle Towing). According to the press service of the brand, the novelty is already working at a plant in Opama, Japan. Experts believe that the introduction of the IVT system will allow Nissan to improve production efficiency.

The modified Nissan Leaf is used on a self-contained tractor to transport finished vehicles between loading and unloading locations in the factory. Unlike autonomous road transport, modern facilities use either rail or long magnetic stripe, and the IVT system does not require special infrastructure.

The tractor unit is equipped with multiple cameras and laser scanners that track markings, curbs and potential obstacles or hazards. Comparing the data with the data on the map, the car calculates its location and moves to its destination without additional assistance. The tractor moves through the plant without exceeding the set speed and can automatically stop when it detects any obstacle or danger in its path.

The movement of the tractor can be easily adjusted by changing the technological processes at the enterprise or the transportation scheme. All autonomous tractors are connected to a central control system that monitors the location, speed, battery power and production status of each vehicle. When two autonomous tractors meet at an intersection, the algorithm of the control system determines the sequence of movement, and in the event of an accident, the system is able to remotely stop one of the two tractors.
