Mitsubishi Outlander 2.4 Mivec variator Instyle

Okay, you can forget about the color and equipment, as they do not play a prominent role in this story. Although we must admit that white belongs to Outlander. Moreover, in combination with the richest Instyle equipment package, which with hooks, roof racks and sill guards in imitation polished aluminum, large 18-inch wheels and additional tinted windows behind the B-pillar, provides many passers-by. The richest equipment package conjures up the Outlander's best-equipped interior, but the truth is, the packages underneath are just as interesting.

For example, already in the basic configuration, Invite includes all safety accessories, an audio system with a CD player and automatic air conditioning. Intense offers cruise control, a leather shifter and steering wheel paddle shifters in addition to cosmetic accessories on the body. The Intense+, on the other hand, is what the owner seems to get the most out of, as it also includes parking and rain sensors, xenon headlights, a smart key, a Bluetooth interface, an audio device with a CD changer, a Rockford Fosgate. an audio system, a third row of seats hidden in the trunk below, as well as accessories that further enhance the Outlander's appearance. As well as the previously mentioned tinted rear windows and imitation polished aluminum hooks.

As a result, only three things remained on the list of the richest Instyle package: 18-inch wheels, leather seats (excluding the rear seat), of which the front part is heated, the driver can also move electrically, and a sliding sunroof. Quite modest considering that this package costs two thousand euros more than Intense + and quite expensive considering that the leather is not the same as what you find in European cars, but (too) smooth and (too) hard amenable to processing. be nice.

If you're worried about money and want a comfortable Mitsubishi SUV, consider an automatic transmission. You will deduct € 500 less (€ 1.500) for that, and as a curiosity, we have to mention that the transmission is continuously variable and 6-speed in manual mode and is only available with a petrol engine. So the only engine on sale from the shelves of Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi has two 2-liter gasoline engines; one is in the Grandis and Galant, and a brand new one has been designed for the Outlander's needs. It has slightly wider openings and shorter movements, but above all it can produce more power (4 kW) and more torque (125 Nm). Even more than the base diesel Volkswagen (232 DI-D), but just under 2.0 Nm less than the PSA. But if we take into account its price, which is about two thousand euros lower than that of the base diesel, and the price of gasoline, which for some time has been higher than the price of gas oil in our country, then the choice of such a unit may not be mistaken. The engine is incredibly sleek when combined with a continuously variable transmission. Too much could be said, since the characteristic torque converter that controls the transmission of engine power blindly prevents wheel spin. Even if only the front wheels are driven. This takes some getting used to, or starting quickly from less congested (non-priority) to congested (priority) roads can be darn dangerous.

Does the other side of the combination of a petrol engine and a continuously variable transmission also show up in fuel consumption? in our test, it ranged from 12 to 5 liters per 14 kilometers. Another thing is when it comes to comfort. The transmission electronics are programmed so that the engine does most of its work in the 7 to 100 rpm range. This also applies to top speed on motorways (2.500 km / h), which the Outlander easily maintains at 3.500 rpm. And it is probably completely unnecessary to point out how enjoyable such a cruise can be, when the rumble from outside is almost inaudible, and when entering the cabin is easily drowned out by the music of the high-quality Rockford Fosgate audio system.

The highway is where this Outlander (engine, gearbox and Instyle package) feels at its best. But it must be admitted that even untidy bases are not intimidated. To be honest, they behave much more comfortably than at the corners of the local road.

evaluation

  • Outlander is a real SUV. The brand image speaks volumes about this. And if desired, it can also be luxurious. With its rich equipment, CVT transmission and the only petrol engine available in combination with it, it is ideal for motorway cruising and, to a lesser extent, for driving on local roads. However, the unorganized base is just as enjoyable as the rest of its versions.
