Well, with the introduction of the new C-Class CLK, numbered 200, the Kompressor also received a new engine. It is not much different from its predecessor, as the volume along with the bore and the mechanism has remained unchanged, so the power is slightly lower. Instead of 141 kW / 192 hp it can put out 120 kW / 163 hp and the torque is also 40 Nm lower as it is around 230 Nm.

With the introduction of the new engine, Mercedes-Benz has filled the 41 kW / 56 hp gap. between the base engine and its compressor brother, but at the same time provided the owners of the new Mercedes-Benz CLK 200 Kompressor with enough sporty characteristics.

The rookie does have a slightly worse acceleration, but even the factory promised 9 seconds from 1 to 0 kilometers per hour is still very much alive for the CLK. In measurements, we even managed to improve this result by four tenths of a second, and we also measured a higher final speed than promised at the factory.

Despite the slightly lower power, there is no need to talk about the inadequate power supply of the new engine. However, we can say that riding with him has become even more sporty. This is mainly provided by a new manual transmission, which is no longer five-speed, but six-speed. More gears and shorter gear ratios between them give the Mercedes-Benz Coupé a little more liveliness in each, which of course requires dynamic drivers to use the gear lever more frequently. But it must be admitted that this task is now much more enjoyable, since the new gearbox is also more precise and the movements are much shorter.

Well, the new CLK 200 compressor still satisfies all those who do not just want to go crazy and go crazy around the bends, and who only know how to enjoy a quiet ride. They will not feel the need for frequent gear changes, as the compressor delivers all 230 Nm of torque from 2500 rpm and speeds up to 4800 rpm, reaching maximum power at 5300 rpm. By this, the novelty under the hood proves once again that it is completely pointless to slide into the red box, as in the case of its predecessor. Only noise and fuel consumption increase.

Unfortunately, despite the lower engine power, all potential buyers of the CLK 200 Kompresor at Mercedes-Benz will still be unhappy. At least in terms of price, because the base model with this engine is still very expensive: 8.729.901 tolar. Right. Unfortunately, the compressor capacity of Mercedes-Benz is not cheap either.

  • The Mercedes-Benz CLK is not a racing car, but rather a coupe that wants to pamper its owner. With Avantgarde equipment, this pleasure even wants to be a little sporty. While the 2,0-litre supercharged engine isn't the best in the lineup, we can say it does the job quite reliably with this equipment package.
