Test drive Mercedes C 220 CDI vs VW Passat 2.0 TDI: center strikers

The new edition of the Mercedes C-Class is undoubtedly one of the stars of the middle class. Does the VW Passat 2.0 TDI, which has been on the market for just over two years, have anything compared to the Mercedes C 220 CDI? Comparison of the two most popular models in the segment.

Like the VW model, the test version of the C-Class has 150 horsepower, or 20 hp. s is larger than its predecessor. In addition, the car with a three-pointed star has become longer and wider, which is clearly visible in the size of the cabin (let's not forget that one of the few more serious drawbacks of the current C-Class was precisely the relatively narrow interior.). And yet - as before, the model of the brand from Stuttgart remains smaller than its opponent from VW. But most buyers of the two cars are quite different from each other.

C-Class - better equipped car

At first glance, in VW, a person gets more for his money. Both models were at the peak of popularity - Comfortline (for VW) and Avantgarde (for Mercedes), and yet the difference in their prices seems quite striking. However, a closer look at the furniture list reveals the fact that the difference isn't really that big, with Mercedes offering things like 17-inch wheels, a tire pressure monitor, a multifunction steering wheel, automatic air conditioning, and other parts as standard. which VW buyers have to pay extra.

As for the chassis, the Passat again surprises more than pleasantly. In an empty car or under full load, this VW always delivers pleasant comfort and good stability. The only thing that can be blamed is that vibrations occur when driving through bumps, which are transmitted completely to the steering wheel. And then the hour of Mercedes strikes - this car creates the feeling that it literally does not care which way it goes. Overcoming bumps of any kind is fantastically smooth, there is practically no suspension noise, and the road behavior is one of the best that has ever been seen in this category. There is no doubt that when it comes to the balance between driving comfort and road holding, the new C-Class is betting on the middle class.

Passat is definitely winning the battle for costs

As for the combination of qualities, Mercedes wins this comparison not only due to a more harmonious chassis, but also due to the much smoother running of the flexible turbodiesel engine, which otherwise demonstrates about the same dynamic performance as the Passat. The tubular VW engine is quite noisy and produces noticeable vibrations, while the common-rail Mercedes sounds almost like a gasoline car. However, the TDI earns points with its low consumption of 7,7 liters per 100 kilometers. The C 220 CDI is more expensive and, along with a significantly higher cost, proved to be a better but also more expensive alternative in tests. Thus, taking into account financial criteria, the final victory goes to the VW Passat.

Evaluation

1.Vw Passat 2.0 TDI Comfortline

Spacious and functional, the Passat fully lives up to its reputation in the middle class - it's well made, offers great comfort, is more economical and significantly more affordable than the C-Class. It is the last two qualities that bring him the final victory in the test.

2. Mercedes C220 CDI Avantgarde

The slightly narrower interior of the C-Class is an even better alternative than two cars. Comfort is the lowest in the class, safety and dynamics are also fantastic, in short - a real Mercedes, which, however, affects the price.
