Mercedes-Benz E 220 d AMG Line

Perhaps bigger and more prestigious rivals can hide from him, but the fight should be focused only on his class. And its competitors, who, in addition to the E-class, form a large trio - the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 series. Of course, the best only in technical terms and built-in technology. However, the best in the general sense is difficult to prove, or rather, it is a matter of debate in the inn.

But the new Mercedes-Benz brings so many innovations that, at least for now (and before the new Audi and BMW), it definitely comes to the fore. The least radical changes are made by the form. The basic silhouette of the design has barely changed. The E remains a prestigious sedan that will inspire fans of the brand and leave indifferent opponents. Although it is longer and lower compared to its predecessor (hence more space inside) and can (like the test car) be equipped with completely new matrix LED headlights. Of course, the great ones that inspire the driver's enthusiasm, and less of those that drive opposite. Even though the electronics control what is happening in front of the car and overshadow the oncoming car. But if there are no major design changes, the interior will open up a new world.

It is clear that it all depends on how much money the buyer spends on lollipops. So it was with the test machine. Basically, the new Mercedes E-Class costs a little more than 40 thousand euros, and the test one costs almost 77 thousand euros. So there was at least as much additional equipment as the well-equipped A, B and C classes cost. Some will say a lot, some will say that he is not even interested in such small (mentioned) cars. And once again I repeat - right. Somewhere it has to be clear which car is premium and which is not, and in the case of the new E-Class, it's not just about price. The car really offers a lot. Already the entrance to the salon says a lot. All four doors are equipped with a proximity key sensor, which means that a locked car can be unlocked and locked through any door. The trunk opens with a seemingly gentle push under the back of the car, and once the latter gets used to it, he always opens the trunk, not just when his hands are full. But an even greater miracle was the test machine inside. In front of the driver is a fully digital instrument panel that even an Airbus pilot cannot protect. It consists of two LCD displays that show the driver all the necessary (and unnecessary) information in high resolution. Of course, they are completely flexible, and the driver can install sports or classic sensors, a navigation device or any other data (on-board computer, phone, radio preset) right in front of his eyes. The center display can be controlled via a button on the center console (and additional sliders above it) or via two trackable pads on the steering wheel. The driver takes a bit of getting used to at first, but once you get the hang of the system, you'll find it's some of the best you'll ever get your hands on. But the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class impresses not only with its interior.

The driver gets a smile as soon as he presses the engine start button. Its rumble is significantly less compared to its predecessors, and it looks like we can trust the Mercedes engineers who say the engines have also been redesigned. It is clear that it is not audible in the engine compartment also because the sound insulation has been significantly improved. Last but not least, this is not important at all - it is important that the driver and passengers do not listen to too loud diesel noise. But a two-liter turbodiesel is not only quieter, but also more maneuverable, faster and, most importantly, more economical. The 100-ton sedan accelerates from standstill to 1,7 kilometers per hour in just 7,3 seconds, and the acceleration ends at 240 kilometers per hour. Fuel consumption is even more interesting. On average, the trip computer showed a consumption of 6,9 liters per 100 kilometers, and the consumption on a normal circle is highlighted. There, the test E consumed just 100 liters of diesel per 4,2 kilometers, which definitely puts it way ahead of the competition. Well, the on-board computer still casts a small shadow of success. The already mentioned computer test on average 6,9 liters per 100 kilometers "crossed" with an accurate paper calculation by an average of about half a liter after a good 700 kilometers. This means that the standard consumption is also a few deciliters higher, but still well ahead of the competition. Of course, the new E is not just an economical sedan. The driver can also select the ECo and Sport and Sport Plus programs in addition to the basic driving mode, including through air suspension (including adjustment of the sensitivity of the engine, gearbox and steering wheel). If this is not enough, he has an individual setting of all parameters. And in sport mode, E can also show muscles. 194 "horsepower" has no problem with a dynamic ride, 400 Nm of torque helps a lot. First of all, the new nine-speed automatic transmission observes flawlessly, listening to the driver's commands exemplarily, even when the driver changes gear using the paddles behind the steering wheel. And now a few words about auxiliary systems.

Of course, it makes no sense to list them all. But it is worth highlighting smart cruise control, active steering and emergency braking. At speeds up to 200 kilometers per hour, the car can come to a complete stop at critical moments, or at least significantly mitigate the consequences of a collision. By watching the car in front, he not only helps himself with the side lines, but also knows how to follow the car in front. Even to the extent that the car on the highway itself changes the lane (up to a speed of 130 kilometers per hour), and in traffic jams obviously stops and starts moving. In the village Test E found (and warned) pedestrians at the crossing. If one of them steps on the road, and the driver does not react, the car also automatically stops (up to a speed of 60 kilometers per hour), and the active cruise control, which can “read” road signs, deserves special praise. and therefore adjusts the speed of the prescribed ride itself. Of course, infrastructure is also needed to successfully use such systems. This one is pretty lame in Slovenia. A simple proof of this, for example, is a decrease in speed in front of a section of a highway. The system will automatically reduce the speed, but since there is no card that can remove the restriction after the end of such a section, the system still continues to operate at too low a speed. And there are many similar cases. While some may find it unimportant to terminate the restriction board, it means a lot to the machine and computer. Therefore, it is believed that such good and technologically advanced cars drive much better on foreign roads. The usability of the systems is also better here, but of course it will take many more years for the machines to operate themselves. Until then, the driver will be the owner of the car, and he really won't be bad in the new E-Class.

Overall rating (387/420)

  • The new E is a technologically advanced machine that can't be blamed for anything. It is clear, however, that it will impress Mercedes enthusiasts the most.

  • Exterior (13/15)

Our designer's job is well done, but so is the Mercedes.

    too similar to each other.

  • Interior (116/140)

The digital dashboard is so impressive that it keeps the driver inside

    nothing else interests.

  • Engine, transmission (62

    / 40)

An area in which we cannot blame the new E.

  • Driving performance (65

    / 95)

Although the E is a large touring sedan, it is commendably not afraid of fast corners.

  • Performance (35/35)

Among the 2 liter engines at the very top.

  • Security (45/45)

The new E not only monitors vehicles and pedestrians on the road, but also notices them at crossings.

and warns the driver about them.

  • Economy (51/50)

Although it is one of the most powerful, it is also above average in terms of economy.
