Mercedes-Benz A-Class: the smallest has the best

Mercedes-Benz continues to successfully update its models. After first meeting the larger (and newer) models, it is now the turn of the smallest. But this time, the modernization of the class A, the third in a row, is so thorough that it is no longer possible to talk about an entry-level model.

First, you need to raise your thumb again for the form, which is still taken care of by the Slovene Robert Leshnik. But this time more for practical reasons. The new A-class design will take some getting used to. Mostly because of the taillights or the rear in general, which seems too general and noticeable in any other car. But this is true until you realize that the shape is such that it is such that the car has the lowest air drag coefficient (CX = 0,25) in the class. Then you don't need to stink of shape anymore, do you?

The new Class A has grown significantly over its predecessor. Especially in length, because the increment is as much as 12 centimeters, something small, but very small, but also in height and width. More important data is a wheelbase increased by three centimeters (due to which there is more space inside) and 20 kilograms less weight of the car. The result is a harmonious car that does not differ too much from its predecessor in its image and at the same time meets the requirements of the modern world. The Germans still want to treat him to both young buyers and those who are young at heart. And if ever, the latter will make a good move - a young looking car with substance that many bigger and more expensive cars would envy.

The interior of the new A-Class is definitely the best part of the car. It offers some innovations that are available for the first time in Mercedes, all others are for the larger and more expensive brothers so far. At the same time, the A-Class in the interior combines sportiness and elegance, providing a much larger circle of fans.

Of course, let's first highlight the brand new MBUX system - Mercedes-Benz User Experience. The center display (which combines gauges and a center display and will be available in three sizes) looks great but is also practical, as it's the first time a Mercedes has had a center touchscreen. At the same time (at an additional cost) those who do not like to control the screen with their fingers will be taken care of - either because it gets dirty, or because it is too far away for them, or it is difficult to get into the desired virtual screen. key while driving. A new touchpad has been added to the center console between the seats, which can also be used to control the screen. It will take some practice, but first impressions are good. If some brands have already offered a similar solution before Mercedes, this seems to be the best. But that's not all, it's possible to control the screen (and other car functions) using the buttons on the steering wheel. The A also has small touchpads between the buttons, and operating them is simple and, above all, logical. And if that's not enough for you, you can pay extra and talk to the system. You activate it with a "Hey Mercedes" greeting and then speak to it in conversational language. Unfortunately not in Slovenian...

Even the rest of the interior is impressive. Of course, thanks to one large screen, various spatial solutions were available, which Mercedes designers grabbed with both hands. Interesting air vents that emphasize sportiness, and the center console - elegance. Laudably, the ventilation control buttons are separated from the main screen and elegantly placed under the center vents. The car sits above average and it will be difficult for an inexperienced driver to understand that he is riding in such a small car.

And when it comes to driving, the new A is above average here as well. Depending on the engine (and later all-wheel drive), the A is equipped with a semi-rigid or multi-link rear axle. The choice of a driving program is available as standard, and in the case of more advanced versions, the damping stiffness can also be determined at the push of a button.

At launch, Class A will be available with three engines. Diesel choice will be limited to the 1,5-litre diesel engine (which is the result of a collaboration with Renault-Nissan). With 116 "horsepower" it's a mid-range performance but relatively quiet thanks to improved passenger compartment soundproofing. There are two petrol engines. The A 200 designation is misleading, as under the hood is a new 1.33-liter four-cylinder engine that offers 163 horsepower and clearly meets most driver needs. The A 250 is already racing. The four-cylinder petrol engine offers 224 horsepower, accelerates from standstill to 100 kilometers per hour in just six seconds, and acceleration stops only at an electronically limited 250 kilometers per hour. And if it sounds promising for such a small car, I can console you - the new A-Class is a technologically advanced car with a lot of auxiliary safety systems. It can already drive in semi-automatic mode under certain conditions, the intelligent cruise control together with the steering assistant tends to drive in the middle of the lane, while at the same time it automatically brakes or adjusts the speed before bends, junctions and roundabouts. At low speeds in the city, thanks to the camera, it can display a live image on the screen, and additional arrows on the screen make it much easier to maneuver in city crowds. At the same time, the new Class A is ready to share the car with friends or family members. The phone has enough application, through it you can arrange everything and, last but not least, unlock the car.

The new Mercedes A can already be ordered in Slovenia.
