Oil Tad-17. Domestic market leader

Composition and labeling

Transmission oil Tad-17, produced in accordance with the technical requirements of GOST 23652-79 (as well as its closest analogue, Tad-17i oil), is intended for use in domestic passenger cars. Suitable for manual transmissions (especially hypoid ones), drive axles, some control systems of passenger cars with a classic rear-wheel drive layout. According to the international classification, it belongs to GL-5 class oils. It is not used in transmissions of trucks and heavy-duty special equipment, since it has an initially increased viscosity, which increases the driving force of the vehicle (in such cases, Tep-15 brand grease is more in demand).

The composition of transmission oil Tad-17 includes:

  1. Oil of naphthenic grades with a density of at least 860 kg/m3.
  2. distillate oil.
  3. Extreme pressure additives containing sulfur and phosphorus.
  4. Antiwear additives based on molybdenum disulphide.
  5. Other components (anti-foam, anti-separation, etc.).

It is difficult to indicate the exact chemical composition of the lubricant in question, since manufacturers consider the percentage of additives they use to be their "know-how", and often recommend "their" oil for certain types of vehicles. Marking interpretation: T - transmission, A - automotive, D - calculated for long-term operation, 17 - average value of the kinematic viscosity of the oil, mm2/ s at 100ºC. It should be noted that recently this marking is considered obsolete, and is gradually being replaced by a new one, adapted to international requirements. This marking is given in GOST 17479.2-85.

In everyday terms, Tad-17 grease is often referred to as nigrol, although the chemical composition of nigrol is largely different: it contains practically no additives, and the actual range of parameters is wider than that of Tad-17.

Physical and mechanical properties

Referring to tension group 5, transmission oil Tad-17 has the following technical characteristics:

  1. Density, kg / m3, at atmospheric pressure - 905 ... 910.
  2. Average value of viscosity, mm2/ s, at 100ºС, no more than - 18.
  3. Operating temperature range of application, ºС – from -20 to +135.
  4. Lubrication efficiency, thousand km - not less than 80.
  5. pH is neutral.

The current standard assumes a high anti-seize ability of the lubricant, the versatility of its use, the possibility of effective separation of the contact surfaces under loads up to 3 GPa and local temperatures in the setting units up to 140 ... 150ºС, which occur during the operation of the vehicle. It is important that these lubricants can be used together with parts made of oil-resistant rubber without destroying the latter.

Tad-17 and Tad-17i. Differences

In the latest version of GOST 17479.2-85 (where, by the way, Tad-17 is already referred to as TM-5-18, i.e., the average viscosity is increased to 18 mm2/c) is referred to as an analogue of transmission oil Tad-17i. How do these brands differ from each other?

Tad-17i grease actively uses imported additives (which was the reason for the appearance of an additional letter in the marking). The changes affected those additives that are responsible for anti-wear and anti-foam characteristics. In particular, the usual molybdenum disulfide has been replaced by the more stable at elevated temperatures Molyslip XR250R. Such a replacement prevents thermal decomposition of molybdenum disulfide (at 300ºС it turns into corrosive molybdenum trioxide), and contributes to the efficient functioning of the mechanical transmissions of the car.

As a comparison, we give the technical characteristics of transmission oil Tad-17i:

  1. Density at room temperature, kg/m3, no more than 907.
  2. Viscosity at 100ºС, mm2/ s, not less than - 17,5.
  3. Operating temperature range of application, ºС – from -25 to +140.
  4. Efficiency, thousand km - not less than 80.
  5. Flash point, ºС, not lower than - 200.

Transmission oil brand Tad-17i withstands the test for corrosion resistance for 3 hours at temperatures of 100 ... 120ºC. Thus, its advantages are manifested under extreme operating conditions.

Tad-17: price per liter

The price range for this brand of gear oils is determined by the financial policy of manufacturers, as well as product packaging. The range of prices for a product is characteristic, depending on its packaging:

Dumping prices for Tad-17 may indicate poor-quality lubricant preparation technology, the likelihood of dilution during the packaging process, as well as the replacement of some components with cheaper analogues. Therefore, in doubtful situations, it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the certificate for the product and check the compliance of the technical characteristics of the lubricant with the norms of the current standards.
