According to the GOST 17479.1-2015 standard, M8Dm oil refers to lubricants for gasoline and diesel engines. Consider the main characteristics of this oil.
- Base. As a base for M8Dm engine oil, a high-purity mineral base is used, developed from low-sulfur grades of oil.
- Additives. The additive package is standard for lubricants of this level. Calcium was used as a dispersant. To improve the extreme pressure and wear-resistant qualities of the lubricant, zinc and phosphorus are used in a minimum amount.
- kinematic viscosity. At 100°C, the viscosity of the oil in question should be between 9,3 and 11,5 cSt, which is SAE 20 by the American Society of Automotive Engineers.
- Sulfur content. Oil refers to low-sulphur, as indicated by the index "m" in the title. That is, sludge deposits when used, even in engines prone to this process, will be minimal.
- Alkaline number. This figure may vary depending on the manufacturer. But usually the alkaline number of M8Dm oils is in the range of 8 mgKOH / g. Approximately the same indicators for M8G2k oils.
- Flash point. On average, oil flares up when heated in an open crucible when it reaches 200 °C. Again, a lot depends on the manufacturer. A similar situation is observed in domestic M10G2k oils, where the actual flash point can vary by 15-20 ° C, depending on who made the lubricant.
- Freezing temperature. As a rule, for low-viscosity greases, the pour point is relatively high. M8Dm oil was no exception: the average pour point is in the region of -30 ° C.
The standard does not limit many of the indicators that are now considered important for motor oils. And these parameters can vary quite a lot depending on who the oil manufacturer is.
Application area
In the standard GOST designation, the scope is largely influenced by the group to which the engine oil belongs. In the case of the product in question, M8Dm, the “D” oil class indicates the following:
- oil can be used in forced gasoline engines with a carburetor or single injection, but without a catalyst or distributed injection;
- the oil in question is also suitable for highly accelerated diesel engines with a turbine and an intercooler, but without a particulate filter, operating in more difficult conditions than group G lubricants.
In fact, the main area of application of this oil is heavy dump trucks, mining machines, tractors and trucks with diesel engines. Less often, oil is used in light commercial trucks with gasoline engines. For the southern regions, a thicker analogue of this oil is used: M10Dm.
The state standard also draws an analogy with the API classification. The oil in question corresponds to the CD / SF class. This is a low standard, and in Western countries lubricants of this level are now considered obsolete and are not produced.
Manufacturers and prices
M8Dm engine oil is produced by several domestic oil refineries.
- Lukoil M8Dm. Sold most often in cans of 18 liters. The average price per liter is 90-100 rubles. A barrel of 205 liters will cost about 90-95 rubles per liter.
- Gazpromneft M8Dm. It costs a little more, on average 105-115 rubles per liter. The most common capacity is 18 liters. Canisters of smaller capacity in terms of the price per liter will cost more.
- Naftan M8Dm. Cheaper option. Estimated price - 85-90 rubles per 1 liter.
- Oilright M8Dm. It costs about the same as oil from Naftan. However, on average, if we consider several sellers, Oilright M8Dm costs a little less. You can find a canister of 20 liters for 1600-1700 rubles. That is, 80-85 rubles per liter.
Reviews about M8Dm engine oil are in most cases neutral-positive. But, if we consider the comments of the owners of the equipment who filled in this oil, it must be used for its intended purpose and it is advisable to change it more often than required by the regulations.
