Short test: Toyota RAV4 2.2 D-CAT 4 × 4 Executive

From this we can conclude that Slovenes like to drive in comfort, use car multimedia and, commendably, do not skimp on the choice of security and assistance systems. But there is another explanation: the vast majority of customers have switched to smaller cars, mainly due to economy, which means that the car (in length) is smaller, so at least they do not give up on equipment and comfort. And Toyota is targeting those customers too.

You can get a basic RAV4 for as little as 20.000 euros, which is still a lot for those who don't have it, but on the other hand, it's for those who are ahead of the times in an SUV a la BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz ML or, maybe a Lexus RX deducted 50 or 70 thousand euros, also 40.000 euros significantly less. It's clear to keep in mind (ego aside) that the difference is clear in both car size and probably engine power. The only possible compensation (and a patch on a wounded ego) is better gear. At best, driver and passengers will feel great in a cabin that has even more to offer than the previous larger and, in all likelihood, more expensive car.

From this point of view, the Toyota RAV4 at its best, like our test car, is a rational choice for many. And this despite the fact that it is more expensive than the base one by more than 100 percent! It is true, however, that it offers the buyer a great deal.

The exterior is already decked out with 18-inch aluminum wheels, xenon headlights, and LED daytime running lights. The front grille is chrome-plated, the exterior mirrors are body-colored and power-folding, and the rear windows are additionally tinted. You don't need a key to get into the car, Smart Entry opens the door and Push Start starts the engine without a key. The interior is almost completely covered in leather - not only the seats and steering wheel, but also the center armrest, center console and even the dashboard.

It is clear that it is pointless to list what the whole interior has to offer, let's just mention the most important ones, such as dual-zone air conditioning, automatic dimming of the interior rearview mirror, a large screen that gives information about the on-board computer, navigation, radio, as well as a camera. for help with reversing. In general, many systems also assist when driving, such as lane departure warning, blind spot warning, and finally, since we are writing about an SUV, there is also a system to help you get downhill and downhill.

In the engine? Yes, the strongest, what else! A 2,2-liter turbodiesel with a capacity of 150 "horsepower" with a displacement of more than one and a half tons, the heavy RAV4 has no problems. The only thing that worries me a little is the automatic transmission, which offers all the comfort and convenience but contributes to rather high fuel consumption. We had a hard time getting average fuel consumption below seven liters per hundred kilometers, and in normal and perhaps more dynamic driving, in reality it is about nine liters per 100 kilometers. However, the RAV4 is a completely convincing car.

It has no problem driving faster, even on twisty roads, and it doesn't get tired of the highway. The average speed can be quite high, but not excessive, because, again due to the automatic transmission, the top speed is as much as five kilometers per hour less than the manual version. But, as stated, the automatic transmission also provides additional driving comfort, and many people easily abandon it by increasing the top speed by five kilometers per hour. After all, he loves the richly appointed cabin, which means much more to many than the size of the engine.

evaluation

  • The Toyota RAV4 is one of the few cars still in production in Japan. As such, its shape is definitely to be commended, and it also delivers above-average interior comfort. But make no mistake: this is not a passenger car and there are still some drawbacks or "differences" but on the other hand, of course, there are some advantages of an SUV. But compared to the previous generation, this is definitely a better car.
