Short test: Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy

Just look at him. He lets us know that this may not be the smartest thing to do - it's ugly to look at a traffic light in the direction of the driver of such a Megane. No, we don't think he's going to beat you up or anything like that. We can only say that it may be that you will soon be looking at the back of a car with RS badging. At Renault, we're used to waiting a bit to get the sharpest version.

The first improved RS already carried the Trophy label, then as a result of cooperation with the F1 team, the Red Bull Racing model took over the baton, and now they have returned to the original name. In fact, this is a special series that has received some technical improvements and cosmetic accessories. "Is he stronger than the regular RS?" is the first question of everyone who sees it. Yes. Renault Sport engineers dedicated themselves to the engine and squeezed an extra 10 horsepower out of it, so it now holds 275 units.

It is worth noting that all cavalry is available after pressing the RS switch, otherwise we are riding in normal engine mode with "only 250 horsepower". The merit of the increase in power cannot be attributed not only to the French, but also to the Slovenian specialists. Each Trophy is equipped with an Akrapovic exhaust system, which is completely made of titanium and thus, in addition to a more pleasant engine bend, also offers, as they say, with Akrapovic, a more pleasant sound color scheme. Well, of course, one should not lose sight of the fact that due to the titanium mixture, such an exhaust system significantly contributes to the reduction of vehicle weight.

Let's clarify: such a trophy does not roar or crack. We have no doubt that Akrapovich could not have produced an exhaust that would break the drums. At first, this will go beyond all legal norms, and driving such a car quickly becomes boring. Therefore, they were looking for the right resonance, which is now and then cut off by the rumble of the exhaust. This is exactly the right form of driving pleasure, when we search for the right engine speed and then extract these sounds from it. In second place on the list of development partners for the RS is the world-renowned shock brand Öhlins, which has dedicated its Trophy adjustable steel spring shocks to its trophy. This kit is the result of the N4 class Megane Realist racing car and allows the driver to adjust the chassis stiffness and shock response.

Race-minded riders will also take good care of the cabin. This is especially true for the excellent Recaro shell rock seats. It is true that you have to move a little to get into the car, but once you get into the seat, you will feel like a baby in your mother's lap. Even the Alcantara steering wheel with red racing stitching in the middle will allow you to always hold the steering wheel with both hands. There are also excellent aluminum pedals that are right apart, so the toe-to-heel technique will do the trick. From a user perspective, it is important to focus on the accessibility and usability of the back bench.

Even installing a child seat in the ISOFIX connectors will accumulate calories for three meals a day. And one more thing: I vowed that every time I saw the best solution among the competition, I would praise the Renault key or card for hands-free access to the car. Praise still matters. What about the trip itself? First, the fact that we immediately switched to RS every time the car started. And not so much because these 250 "horses" are not enough for us. Initially, because that's when the sound changes, and it's nice to hear the grunt of the exhaust.

It's more than just acceleration, it's an amazing range of flexibility in all gears. When an obstacle in the form of a truck moving at 90 kilometers per hour comes up in the fast lane, it is enough to accelerate in sixth gear, and those behind you will still be amazed by the acceleration. However, if you take a more winding road, you will quickly realize that the trophy is at home. An extremely neutral position is the reason such a Megane will be well mastered by even less experienced riders, while four-piston Brembo calipers provide effective deceleration. Megane Trophy is a little more than six thousandths more expensive than the usual "heresy". It may seem like a lot, but if you go shopping in Elins, Rekar and Akrapović alone, you will quickly double that number.

  • The regular Megane RS offers a lot, but the Trophy label makes it the perfect car for real driving pleasure. In general, this is a set of technological accessories that are much more expensive on free sale than in such a packaged Megan.
